Request for our support from Jaqueline, Jen's friend

I have had a request from a friend for our support. The copied mail explains everything. So I am forwarding the link to my contacts. I hope this is in order.

"Hi Guys,

Apologies for this but we are a few signatures short of our 7k target and need them before 12 March.

Highways England, as some of you know, have banned cyclists from a number of roads and are now looking at the A63 - the one Wiggo trained on.

Cycling UK have taken up the banner and made voting easy. Just fill in the details and they will print off and personally deliver to the Leeds depot in time.

Feel free to forward the link to your contacts."

John R’s Ride Sunday 25th Feb

For those club members coming from Carlisle area there is a road closure from Blencowe to Greystoke. When I was reccing on Friday I went along as far as the closure signs, the hedges have also been cut and there is a lot of debris on the road, so I will amend my route from Greystoke to go via Johnny to Lamonby.

Roads on the route are dry with one or two ice smears which are relatively easily seen. Forecast for tomorrow winds are from the SE and a little stronger than today. Most of the route is relatively sheltered and we will stop twice (Mill Inn Mungrisedale and Granny Dowbekins Pooley Bridge) to warm up,

The route is just over 40 miles and is best described as undulating, with no major climbs. I look forward to seeing you at Greystoke. John Roelich

Jen's ride 25 th February

I have decided to go ahead with my ride. Around 25 miles in total from Winton to Newbiggin for lunch via Sunbiggin tarn returning via Ravenstonedale then probably Waitby then Soulby. I have had a little ride out, the roads are fairly dry and any wet/icy areas are easy to see.
Coffee to start and tea to finish but no pressure if it is just too cold and windy

Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation - Sent to the Secretary

to Sec EVCUK............

Hi Geoff,

I’m currently launching a campaign to find 20 people to come together and cycle London to Paris over four days to fund four months of lung cancer research.
I’m not sure if you are aware but lung cancer is the biggest cancer killer in both men and women yet receives the least funding per death than any other cancer . Being able to recruit people to raise this money would make a huge difference to the charity.
We are promoting the ride that takes place on 25th – 29th July as it is the Tour De France special in which participants can enjoy their last day in France watching the final leg of the world famous Champs-Elysees.

I wondered if there was any opportunity for you to share this with members of your club please?

If it is something you would be able to help with, please feel free to contact me on the details below . The link with further information is:

Wednesday 21st February Club Ride

The weather forecast looks OK for Wednesday, although it may be a bit chilly in Melmerby! Ride will be as advertised - a one stop ride with late 11's / early lunch in Melmerby. The ride out is about 23 miles crossing the River Eden at Lazonby. The return leg will cross the Eden at Langwathby and I've put a little loop in towards the end of the ride crossing the new Bell Bridge over the River Caldew bringing a total distance of about 51miles.
Cheers,
Bill.

Challenge rides - Sunday 8th July

We have fixed a date for an open Challenge Ride Event which will be held on Sunday 8th July centred on Mungrisdale VH. There will be a 100km and 100mi courses somewhat like the rides we did last year but open to all. Put the date in your diaries! Details on our web pages including auto entry to the event!
Julie Rand has welcomed us and CUK will help with publicity, I hope as many of as possible will take part or help as like the Birthday Rides this is us doing our bit to publicise and get more people involved in cycling

More important please let me know by email if you will be around at the time and would be prepared to get involved. We are looking for helpers in the following roles:

Participant!
Guide on the route  - there will be allocated speeds for guided groups but I don't envisage everyone will want to be in a guided group.
Help with support ('Sagwaggon' emergency support - probably need 2 vehicles)
Help with catering - please contact Claire Barron
Help with registration
Help with Entries

A big thank you to all those who have already shown interest.
Geoff
PS Any comments or suggested ammendments/errors spotted; to Geoff please asap.

Sunday 18th February - club ride

The ride will be a circuit of Skiddaw starting 10am at the car park in Dalston.    As the forecast is for showers all day and it will be cold, I will ignore what I put on the runs list and we will stop for refreshments twice.    A late 11's at Maes Cafe, Uldale and a late lunch/early afternoon tea at Threlkeld village hall cafe.
I look forward to seeing one or two of you at the start.

Wednesday 14th Valentine's day ride?

This is what I wrote earlier as a draft...

Looks to be both wet and possibly snowy but that's no excuse!
We will probably take a more sensible route than across the fellside but beginning and lunch points likely to remain the same.
Small amount of parking at Station House and 'cuppa' if you arrive early. Let's hope for better weather than the forecast.

Despite the gloomy forecast I am happy to lead a ride which I think we might finalise when the hordes arrive at the start! I no longer feel obligated to go to Warwick bridge!

Wed 14th. Feb 2 Bike Ride Cancelled

I am cancelling the Wed 14th Feb  2 Bike Ride from Dalston due to adverse weather conditions.
The forecast is very unpleasant to say the least. It will be below freezing overnight and only 2 deg at 10.00 am but with a SSE wind of 23 mph gusting to 40 mph it will feel like -4 deg. There will be rain heavy at first with wind and rain persisting into the afternoon. Not conditions for '2 Bike Riders' to be out.

Puncture Prevention message

11/12th February 2018

Safety Warning

Anyone riding the B5320 between Tirril an Pooley Bridge (Granny Dowbekins) tomorrow 12th Feb be warned the agricultural hedge-cutters have been busy and both sides of the carriageway today. It is covered in thorns and twigs etc.

Club ride Sunday 11th February

Due to the weather forecast tomorrow, I have decided to change the start of the ride to 10.00 at Cotehill so we can play it more by ear and ride on known roads rather than risking ice and snow in the wilds of Scotland. Let’s call it a mystery tour of North Cumbria - distance flexible, but not a training ride. Hope to see some of you out tomorrow if I haven’t put you off completely. If it is really icy it might be an idea to put walking boots in your car and we can do a walk from Cotehill as a Plan C.

Wednesday's 2 bike ride - cancelled

Hello all - in view of the weather conditions and the risk of ice, I won't be leading a ride from Penrith tomorrow. Obviously you can make your own way to the coffee stop (Pot Place) or see David's ride at UpFront (lunch). Whatever you do, take care of yourselves.

WEDNESDAY 7 FEB RIDE

WEDNESDAY 7 FEB RIDE
Hi All,  A lot of melt water about and a forecast of frost overnight and until mid morning.
My planned ride would be unsuitable so tomorrow's  ride will be on salted roads (unfortunately main roads) where the risk of ice is still present but reduced.
Start at Hesket Newmarket car park. Ride B5299 to Dobies Garden Centre, near Dalston, along the link road to Durdar (not a pleasant ride), then on the back road to Hutton in the Forest,  then stop at UP FRONT before riding the B5305 back and over Warnell Bank.
Incidentally Dobies instruct us to push our bikes thro the shop (not the food hall) and park in the plants' area next to the cafe.
There is a chance that ice will prevent me get away from my house but I will do my best, if so please start without me.
