WEDNESDAY 22 FEB RIDE

Hi All
Weather looks ok for tomorrow, a bit windy but the route should not be too exposed.
11's stop at Glenridding is at the FELLBITES CAFE adjacent to the main carpark, ie not the usual venue.
Best wishes & good cycling
David Harrison

New look website - have you noticed?

Geoff has done the most amazing job of posting up the Birthday rides so that these lovely routes from Penrith are accessible to local cyclists and visitors alike. Many club members put a huge amount of work into setting up and checking out these routes and I am really glad that all that effort is not lost. I suspect this may have taken Geoff some time so a special 'thank you' is due for this and for all the other work he puts in to the website set-up and maintenance, as well as being the perfect club secretary! I hope he will receive your support for the 'Challenge rides' on which he is taking the lead, as previously blogged.

Sunday 19 th Feb - Main Ride ( Revision )

Since Parker is unable to lead his published ride, I have agreed to lead a similar excursion on to the Solway. My intended route is as follows : -

Start – Dalston Car Park at 10:00

11’s – Wheyrigg Hall Hotel [ Approx 14 miles ]

Lunch – Banksmill Garden Centre ( Dunes CafĂ© ) [ Approx 11 miles from 11’s ]

Return – Back to Dalston [ Approx 23 miles ]

The overall distance is approximately 48 miles.

I look forward to seeing some riders at the start or at one or the other of the “ watering holes “ around the circuit and the weather is is kind to us.

Sunday 19 February moderate ride

If anyone would like to join me, as I have only a very short ride to the coffee stop at Melmerby shop, I plan to leave Melmerby at 12 and cycle to Appleby for lunch. Moderate pace, familiar lovely fellside route - look forward to seeing you.

club ride - Sunday 12th February

The ride will start from behind the pub at Calthwaite.   The route will go through Skelton, Ellonby, Greystoke, Bennett Head, Pooley Bridge, Great Strickland to Morland where we will stop for lunch.   After lunch the route will go through Kirby Thore, Newbiggin, Culgaith, Langwathby,  Lazonby and we will return to Calthwaite via Thiefside.   The total distance will be about 55 miles.   The terrain is undulating.

At present, the forecast is for it to be dry but with a possibility of snowfall.    Watch this space.

Challenge/Audax Rides

In the long winter evenings I have been thinking about the success of the TriVets rides in the past, and of the enjoyment that a number of members of the group get from setting ourselves the challenge of riding in Audax and Sportive events. I was thinking that we could in a small way set up something similar from within the group.

The simplest model is one that the Kent Valley Club has tried which involves a series of Audax style rides (gpx and routecards provided) which can be ridden independently on the day or together with club members. In the same way as for Audax events you gather data together essentially to show that you have completed the ride. At the start of the ride they provided tea/coffee and biscuits and at the end there was a light meal. (This may or may not be included in the price of entry) Could we cater?
The event would be publicised on the website and by email to local groups and could be part of a series of say three involving different distances of say 30, 60 and 100mi. We would have to decide whether like the TriVets it would be better to run it midweek or at the weekend (Saturday would avoid clashes with Group Rides or maybe it could replace the '3 bicycle' ride that Sunday?) I imagined that this would happen during the months of June July and August.

If anyone is interested in pursuing/helping with this idea I should be interested in hearing from them soon so that we can arrange a meeting as soon as we get back from Spain!

David's 1000km Cycle Ride

Hi all
Club members kindly joined in sponsoring me for the above ride, that was at a lunch put on by Mike & Claire. Altogether over £10,000 was raised for Hospice at Home.
It is time that I reported on my sponsored ride across France. So this will be at Matterdale Church Room (attached to the church) at 4.00pm on Saturday 11Feb. All welcome, no charge, tea & coffee available. There will be a collection for Hospice at Home.
Best wishes

Club Ride Wednesday 8 Feb

Wednesday's ride will officially start from the church in Burneside at 1000. As usual, there will be parking for a few cars on our drive (the road through to Burneside from the A6 has now been reopened). This will be a one stop ride with lunch in Cartmel (approx. 28 miles).
The route to Cartmel will be via Staveley, Crosthwaite, Grange and Flookborough. After lunch we will return via Haverthwaite and the Rusland Valley before getting the ferry to Bowness on Windermere (cost £1 passenger + bike). From Bowness we will return via the Crook road to Burneside for a total distance of approx. 50 miles.
At the moment the forecast is looking good, with temperatures above zero, but if things should change temperature wise, the route out to Grange may be modified in the first instance. As such, I will update this blog if - and only if - changes need to be made.
Refreshments will be available in Bowston post ride.
I hope to see some of you on Wednesday.

Post Easter Week April 22-29 Kenwick Woods, Louth

There are some places left, one or maybe two double rooms and space for a single man.

We have had interest from Cycling UK members outside EV but we just wanted to check that no club members want the spaces before offering them outside the club.
It will work out at about £120 pp for the week.

Contact Dallas if you are interested.

We will need final payments at the beginning of March.

Granny Dowbekins at Pooley Bridge is closed until Tuesday 7 Feb

Granny Dowbekins has been shut for a month for refurbishment and doesn't open again until next Tuesday. Our self led ride will need to meet elsewhere.
I have spoken to Peter who is leading the main ride and now proposes to have his coffee stop at Morland.
I think the best thing is for the self-led ride to go the same way, so...
SUNDAY 5 FEB the self-led ride will go to the Mill café at Morland.
As we were due to go to Morland the following Wednesday 8 February, and as by that time Granny Dowbekins will be open, I propose on WEDNESDAY 8 FEBRUARY the self-led ride will go to Pooley Bridge.
Sorry for any confusion,
Alison

Club Ride Sunday 5 February 2017

Sunday's ride will start from Langwathby Railway Station at 10am. The route takes us out to Culgaith, Morland and Great Strickland, before heading over Celleron for refreshments at Granny Dowbekin's Cafe in Pooley Bridge.

After the break, we'll head along Ullswater to the Brackenrigg, then via Bennett Head to Greystoke and on through Ellonby and Skelton before arriving at the Upfront Cafe for lunch.

After lunch, we'll head out through New Rent and Plumpton before arriving back at Langwathby Railway Station to finish. Total mileage will be 46 miles with a total of about 2234ft of climbing (but not in one go!).
Hope to see you on Sunday.

Todays rides

Just a note from myself and Rosie to say thank you to the members who joined us for the rides today, and for contributing so generously to the Alzheimers Soc.  £144 was raised. Brilliant.
