Off Road vehicles off road

Through one of our members I have received an email from which I quote below.
Submissions have to be in by the 9th April.
Please would you email, ring, write, speak or even shout at me with your thoughts:
Should I support off road vehicles off road
Should oppose off road vehicles off road
Would this affect cyclists' off road accessibility
What about motor bikes off road
What about ebikes off road ...?

'Dear Mountaineering and Climbing Clubs

You will be aware I am sure of that the government is consulting on its response to the Glover landscapes review. I am getting in touch on behalf of the Green Lanes Environmental Action Group (GLEAM) to alert you to the consultation questions on ‘off-roading’ on green lanes by recreational motor vehicles (4x4s and motor bikes). Green lanes are either Byways Open to All Traffic or the unsealed, unclassified roads (UURs) shown on the OS map as Other Routes with Public Access.
We know from our work with Parish Councils and local communities that off-roading on both BOATs and UURs is a serious issue, damaging precious landscapes all over the country, even in the National Parks and AONBs. It is also causing nuisance, sometimes danger, for non-motorised users, residents, farmers and landowners. It is also clear that the current legislative framework for controlling use of recreational motor vehicles on unsealed tracks in the countryside is failing.
We hope that your club will take part in the current consultation and will want to support the prospect of new legislation to prohibit off-roading, as a minimum in protected landscapes, preferably countrywide.
The government’s response to the Glover review and the online consultation on its response are at Government response to the Landscapes Review - Defra - Citizen Space
The ‘off-roading’ questions are questions 13 to 17.
The consultation closes on 9 April'

A Date for your diaries (Ullswater closed road ride)

Cecilia is a member of  SITU (Sustainable Integrated Transport for Ullswater) https://situcumbria.org.uk is a group of Parish Councillors and supporters from the Parishes that surround Ullswater. As part of the campaign to raise awareness of the need for safer cycling provision in the Ullswater area, SITU are trying to organize a ‘Cycling Sunday’ along a section of the A592 that will involve closing it to motor vehicles from 10am – 4pm on Sunday 25th September 2022 and encouraging lots of cyclists, wheelchair users as well as the usual walkers to enjoy one of the most beautiful roads in the country. The section runs from Aira Force to ‘Knotts/Outward Bound – so not very far (!) but the idea will be to encourage families, the less confident etc. Plans are at an early stage but feedback from the County and others looks promising. I will keep you updated.
Just an advance notice. The website is a work in progress but the opening pages are bright, informative and show ambition.

2 bike ride from Burton-in-Kendal CANCELLED

I have decided not to put this ride on after all.   I’m getting stressed about the possible weather conditions. At the moment the forecast for that area is not very promising.  Although conditions may improve I frankly can’t be bothered worrying about it.   I will be staying in the area anyway and I fully intend going for a ride regardless of the weather but I will do so on my own.

Sunday Ride - CANCELLED

I am watching rain lash against the kitchen window and strong wind blowing the trees - definitely NOT the weather for safe cycling, so sadly I am cancelling my planned ride for today.

Today's ride CANCELLED

Reluctantly I'm cancelling today's ride. It is 'tipping' down here in Carlisle & set in for the day according to the forecast. There would be no fun in cycling in these conditions. I hadn't received any notification of any one attending & don't fancy being soaked-alone. Sorry.

Regards,

John H

3 Bike Ride Sunday 13th February

50 mile ride starting at the bridge in Armathwaite (parking available on the bridge) at 10:00 hours. Walton, Lanercost, Brampton, Kirkoswald, Lazonby, Plumpton, Calthwaite, Southwaite & back to Armathwaite.

Stopping in Brampton for refreshments & Plumpton (if needed).

The good news: there is no frost, ice or snow forecast 😁 The bad news:  heavy rain & breezy conditions are forecast ☹️ I will keep an eye on the forecast & check the conditions early tomorrow morning. If I decide to cancel I will ' blog it' (& text) around 08:00 hours to prevent anyone travelling unnecessarily. If the ride goes ahead & it turns 'miserable' it is possible to miss out large parts.

CycleTouring Festival 2022

This years virtual Cycle Touring Festival runs from 12th to 20th February.   The talks on Zoom will include gravel riding, mountain biking and road cycling in the UK and mainland Europe.   Also cycle trips in South America, Africa and the Middle East.   I watched most of the talks at last years festival and was impressed by the quality of the speakers and the subject matter.

The programme for this years can be found on the Cycle Touring Festival facebook page or on their website CTC

Sunday Ride CANCELLED

Having just watched the weather forecast on the telly I have decided that I don't want to go cycling tomorrow, so please DON'T come to Dalston and expect to see me there.

Cheers,

Bill

Sunday Ride

My initial thoughts were for a ride around the northern fells, but strong westerly winds and high probability of rain forecast makes me think otherwise!

If you would still like to go out for a ride then meet in Dalston at 10:00 and we will go for a mystery tour governed by the weather conditions on the day. Send me a text or WhatsApp if you are coming for what may be an invigorating ride!
