Ride on Sunday 25th April

I have advertised this as a 'one-bike' ride as it will only be my 11th outing on a bike this year, I don't have an e-bike and am slow up hills.

The plan is to leave Melmerby at 10.15 to cycle via Milburn and Kirkby Thore to Temple Sowerby, arriving there around 11.30, hoping to avoid the lunch rush - about 12 miles. We will return via Langwathby; the short route takes us via Little Salkeld, the longer, hillier route along the other side of the River Eden to Lazonby and Kirkoswald.

If you wish extend the ride you can do so by cycling to and from Melmerby. The Bakery is open from 9 so you can have coffee before we start if you wish.

Please text (07500 564922) or phone (01768 881066) if you would like to join the ride.

Mountain Bike Ride Friday 30th April

I have changed the date and venue of my second MTB Ride because on reflection the Keswick Railway path route originally chosen was not really  suitable. There was too much climb up to Longscale Fell and the Terrace back is really not that pleasant. I have chosen a ride using the Whinlatter Blue MTB  Trail but starting at Hobcarton Car Park. Although this involves a climb up the Fire Road to the start of the trails it is an interesting warm up. The Blue MTB Trail is smooth and swoopy and is a really good introduction to off Road MTB riding.  If people find Blue trail manageable we could try the first part of the South Red Route.  Please text me if you wish to join me. Bring some lunch and a drink as I am not sure the Cafe will be open.

2 Bike ride Wednesday 21st April

Rosie will lead a 2 bike ride from Beacon Edge Cemetery lay-by, Penrith at 10am. The ride will be to Morland for early lunch via Culgaith, and Temple Sowerby. We will stop at Morland, but if you wish bring your own lunch. If you intend to come please text to 07818241833.

Ride from Dalston 21st April

Ride starts at 09:30. A ride of about 50 miles with one stop at the Village Bakery in Melmerby where there is outside seating. Also plenty of space on the village green if you prefer to bring your own refreshments.

Follow this LINK for GPX file

Please text me on (07921 297 045) if you would like to join me. We will split into smaller groups if numbers dictate. COVID rules apply.

Ride from Greystoke Sunday 18th April

Ride starts at 9.30. A moderately paced ride of 40 miles with one stop after 20 miles at Temple Sowerby. This is at the new Velo Cycle cafe where there is good outside seating. There are also plenty of picnic spots in the village if you prefer BYO.

Please text 07906 896503. There are already 8 of us so we will need to split into smaller groups. Take a note of the route and/or GPX file if you can. Covid rules apply!

Eden Valley COVID 19 Policy

Covid-19 has been with us for over a year. It would be nice to think it has run its course. Sadly it has not.

This Policy has to cover an indefinite period during which it will have to be changed.

Areas that the Club has to consider are (‘Risks’):

1.     Club Rides

2.     Club Socials (including Committee Meetings)

3.     ‘Club events’ at which non-members are present (Challenge Rides ...)

The Government has certain Requirements (Government Requirements) which have changed many times and will continue to change.

Club Committee Meetings will continue to be held remotely (principally by Zoom) for the present.

For other elements of 2 and 3 above (Club Socials and Club events) it is not intended to organise any such events for the time being.

Club Rides:

The Club members, like it or not, are seen (by many non cycling members of society) as ‘cyclists’, not always with the greatest of enthusiasm.

It is important that Club Members demonstrate their awareness of risks of infection to themselves and others.

Club Rider Leaders have a Club Risk Assessment and Checklist a copy of which is on the Club Website and has been circulated to members principally by email.
The Club Risk Assessment and Checklist is as important to general Club members as to the Ride Leaders

We ride ‘at our own risk’ as we have always done.

Riders need to ensure they are properly equipped (it is advised that members consider carefully before offering others assistance, taking precautionary steps such as wearing masks, using Nitryl gloves, wiping down tools etc after other’s use etc).

Strict adherence to the Government Requirements is really important.

Whilst riding as a Group Activity, the maximum number of cyclists in the Group is 15.
The Club recommends that rides are divided into smaller groups than 15.
To assist Ride Leaders plan Riders should contact the Leader at the latest in the evening before the ride, preferably by text to inform her / him of their intention to join the group.

In considering the Role of Ride Leaders the Committee took into account:

  • regular attendees do not need detailed warning every time they go out with the Club
  •  repetition would not improve reception / adherence (people switch off)
  •  irregular / first time /anxious attendees may need reassurance / more than one familiarisation
  • leaders all have their own style and being too prescriptive as to delivery of Covid anxiety issues is likely to impede delivery of the message
  • restrictions on our lives are to be expected. Those Restrictions should not be so onerous that they are not acceptable to the majority / a significant group.

Before Rides members are reminded not to share vehicular transport.
Before the ride starts the general Government Requirements apply.
The Leader will call the (riding) group together for briefing which starts the ride.
When the ride pauses (e.g. Coffee Stop) or stops (end of ride), the Government Requirements for the general population come back into effect.
End of Ride: at the destination of the ride getting off the rider’s bike triggers the application of the general Government Requirements (Rule of 6 etc).
The ‘ride’ may be extended if the Leader indicates that she / he wishes to talk something through about the ride with one or more with members of it.

The  Club Committee requests Club members to exercise a very disciplined approach – split into groups of not more than 6, not engage with others outside that 6 (i.e. not engage with those they have just been or are about to ride with) wear masks where needed etc.

There are grey areas around what is a Club Ride?
Are they ‘all activities which involve members’ presence, however they may be promoted (does this include occasions when someone is not / no longer, a member)?
Whatever Club members have to comply with the Government Requirements.

Coffee stops:
The general Government Requirements apply. Club members are general members of the public.

The Club wants to encourage cycling; coffee stop rides have been the principal Club activity for some members. Cycling UK says that cycling should not be discouraged as it is a good form of activity for peoples’ health

It is good for the general public to see how responsible cyclists can be.

Records of rides:
Role of Covid Officer is to encourage members to stay safe for themselves and others.

Records of attendance on rides and including Coffee Stops have to be kept. Such Records have been kept for years as members know (what would an AGM be like without them?).

The Records are open to the NHS for Track and Trace purposes.

Covid Officer 13.4.2021

Electric Car v. Internal Combustion Engine Environmental CO2 Equivalence = 94,000 miles!

Fascinating series of articles in one of the Jaguar Club's monthly magazines by very credible chap called David Wood about the CO2 environmental impact of battery electric cars (BEV's).  Many of our group are environmentally aware and may have or be considering buying a BEV - in which case read on ....

Suspect few are aware that in terms of CO2 emissions taking into account production of car and battery plus oft-quoted engine emission of course, equivalence is not reached to that of  an internal combustion engine (ICE) until 94,000 miles!!!!

I have a scanned pdf extract with more information, but don't have the knowledge to link it to this blog! Uploaded it to google drive and then reached threshold of incompetence ....so if anyone wants it just ask.

Friday 16th MTB route change

I have decided to change the route for Friday’s Mtb ride as a result of travelling along the Keswick Railway Path last week. It will still be in the School holidays and foot traffic is likely to be even heavier than it was when I cycled down it last week.

I have planned to do the ride from Askham instead. We will meet at Askham Swimming Pool Car Park for a 0930hrs start. From there we will travel up to Heughscar Hill meander round the delightful Askham fells, before taking the BW which leads to the Lowther estate and a coffee/lunch stop if it is open. Please bring something to eat and drink in case the cafe is closed.

I have had two Club Members indicate that they plan to join me on the Original ride and I will text them to alert them of the change. Please text me on 07879436153 if you would like to join me on this delightful ride.

Round the World Cycling Record Attempt Movie

I received this email this morning. If anyone is interested the tickets cost £8 (not sure if this includes the 20% discount or not).

Hello!

I hope you are doing well today?

My company is working with Jenny Graham to stream Eastbound along with a Q&A and live chat and we would be delighted to offer your cycling community and members a 20% discount on tickets to watch the film online.

'Eastbound' follows the incredible endurance cyclist Jenny Graham on her journey to break the Guinness round-the-world cycling record and to prove to herself that an ordinary mum from the Highlands of Scotland can do something extraordinary. The film is amazing and will appeal to all ages.

The film will be available to watch between the 22nd and 25th of April via ADVENTURE+

If you are willing to share this with your members and community I have attached some pictures for you to share and the ticket link you can use for the discounts is "EASTBOUND20"

Thanks,
Will

Group Cycling in COVID Times

There is a wealth of advice and guidance on the CUK website about group cycling in COVID times. In fact, there is so much information that it can be daunting to find what is relevant. As a club we have duty of care to our members by ensuring that all our activities are carried in a safe manner. The committee is currently going through the process of generating a risk assessment to cover our activities and appointing a COVID officer to keep up to date with the latest guidance and be the main point of contact for the group with regards to Covid.

In the meantime:

  1. Let the ride leader know in advance if you are intending to join his or her ride. If more than 6 people turn up, then we should consider riding in smaller groups.
  2. Do not join a ride if you have any COVID symptoms or if you have been in contact with someone who has COVID.
  3. Maintain social distancing at start of ride and any time when stopped.
  4. Bring a face covering with you – also for use if close contact with other members becomes necessary – e.g. if you need assistance with bike repairs etc.
  5. If possible, carry out your own bike / puncture repairs. Bring your own tools etc.
  6. Carry a small bottle of hand sanitiser.
  7. When stopped e.g. at a cafe or for a picnic we are no longer an organised sport therefore normal COVID rules apply.
  8. If you feel unwell after a ride, then please let the ride leader know so that the rest of the group can be warned.
  9. People are responsible for their own safety

Remember HANDS, FACE, SPACE

Hopefully things will improve over the next few weeks and these rules will become assigned to history.

Gravel / Mixed / Easy MTB Friday 10.30 start

Please note that the ride starts from the bridge at Mill Rigg over Crowdundle beck(GR  NY609282). There is a small parking place on the road to Acorn Bank and if necessary more space as you turn off the old A66 onto the B6412 (606280)

The ride is mixed road and bridleway mostly flat and easy. There is a steep hill up out of Orton onto the fell and there are some thought provoking bits if you are not on an MTB but any bike with 32mm or more tyres and good gears would be suitable. I would say it is a great introduction to gravel riding.

Finally note the starting time is changed as I have an appointment to get my second Covid jab at 0915 in Penrith!

GPX of route here 55km about 850m ascent

Two rides on Wednesday 7th April

It would be helpful if you let either David or Rosie know if you intend to join their  rides on Wednesday. This will help them manage the numbers and if necessary organize into distinct groups with  a maximum of six riders.

The committee are working through the CUK advice so that we can present a single, clear and user friendly COVID check list for our rides which will be available shortly.

Monday 5 April 2021

I am intending to ride to Melmerby on Wednesday for a takeaway coffee at the Bakery. If anyone would like to join me I will leave Beacon Edge at 10am. Will do a loop there and a different loop back so maybe cover about 20 -25 miles. Aiming to be back by 1:30. If more than 6 we will need to split the group. Rosie

WEDNESDAY 7 APRIL

 Hi

Start at Greystoke car park at 9.30. Clockwise around Skiddaw via Ireby.

Groups of 6. cyclist  No cafe stops planned so BYO. The shop at Heskett Newmarket (HN) may be open but HN is the second stop. I expect the ride will be slow. My legs are certainly short on miles. David

New Cycle Cafe in Temple Sowerby

Dear Chairman and Secretary of Eden Valley Cycling UK,

I hope that you don’t mind me contacting you directly on this matter, however, I wanted to advise you and your members of a new Café opening in Temple Sowerby.

The Temple Sowerby House Hotel will be opening a great new Café called Temple Velo, to cater for cyclists that pass through the village, before, during or after a ride in the Lakes, Pennines or Dales.

The Café will serve great locally sourced, homemade food and drink, as well as a great range of homemade cycle and diet friendly nutrition to consume on the go. All food will be produced in our kitchens onsite with a focus on sustainability and environmental impact. The café has indoor and outdoor seating in a beautiful garden and court yard, with 30 secure bike racks and a self-service cycle workshop in a converted stable, just for those on the go emergencies we encounter from time to time.

The Café will initially open on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays from the 16th April 2021, with a full launch planned on the 21st May 2021, just in time, we hope, for a post lockdown season of riding.

As the café develops and gets established special events will be planned all with a cycling theme. This could be anything from Art exhibitions to themed days based around the Queens Stages of major events in the UCI and UK Race calendar. The café will also cater for cycling groups/clubs to hire the venue for meetings or for those further afield, there is B&B accommodation and a Coach house that sleeps 6 for hire, with secure cycle storage, bike wash and workshop.

Please can I ask you to let your members know about the café and we look forward to welcoming you all when we open.

Kind Regards, Pete Pearce (on behalf of Alison and Andi at the House Hotel)

Sunday's ride: Lazonby to ...well wherever you... like Dufton/Appleby

Hi

It's been so long I have forgotten how to blog. Hope this works.

Sunday's ride is from the car park in Lazonby ( by the river) meet at 9.30am - originally I was planning to go to Appleby and back (40 ish) , if this is too far we can go to Dufton and back (20 ish), I am relaxed.

We can be chilled - literally and metaphorically as I think layers will be required. Bring food I have no idea if cafe's are open. Hopefully coffee in Dufton.

I have two booked in plus one if the weather is fine ( and we all know who that is!). However priority goes to those who bring Easter eggs.  We can split into groups if there are hordes of us. Strictly 6 per group, but we can swap groups in Dufton

Look forward to seeing someone in 3D.

Liz.
