2 bike ride to Appleby

I shall be leaving Langwathby at 9.30; eta at Culgaith level crossing is around 9.50/9.55, then via Temple Sowerby and Bolton into Appleby up Colby hill. I'm planning to leave bikes in the Cloisters and arrive at Bojangles 11ish which hopefully avoids the Sunday lunch rush. Return will be the fellside route; 27/28 miles in total at my gentle (non-assisted) pace. I hope I'm not alone...

David Wilson

Early this evening, I heard from Keith Smith that sadly David Wilson has died.

David was an active member of EVCuk and was involved with establishing the idea of fixed centre cycling / camping holidays mainly in France

For many years club members enjoyed these holidays using the Bike Bus as transport to France.

Further blogs will be posted when more information is known.

From Joy Moore

I just thought that you would like to know that the donations at Peter’s funeral very kindly made in lieu of flowers amount to £140. That's £70 to Penrith Mountain Rescue Team and £70 to the RAF Benevolent Fund.

Grateful thanks from myself and the family to all members of the cycle group who attended and donated. Some people are also very generously donating independently.

Also, many thanks for the lovely cards and messages from others who could not be at the funeral.

Are cycling helmets the best thing since sliced bread?

Are cycling helmets the best thing since "Sliced Bread" or is it marketing BS?

There was an interesting programme on Radio 4 last week about the effectiveness of cycling helmets and what to look for when purchasing. You can find it on BBC Sounds - Sliced Bread last Thursday (22nd) at 12:32 or search for podcast "Sliced Bread"

A bit hilly in the morning but a nice, flat (ish) & easy second half. There may be some rain, according to the current forecast, but nothing to worry us hardy EV' ers, but if required 'bail out’ options exist 😁

All welcome for a trip to the seaside & no one gets left behind. Hope some of you can join me πŸ‘

Sunday 25th June Gretna to Glencaple

Solway coast ride on the Scottish side, should be around 55miles. Due to popular demand a ride with a few less hills. The weather forecast is a bit variable and looks like it might be a bit breezy. Starting at the car park in Gretna off Central Avenue, out to Glencaple and lunch stop at the Boat House cafe. The cafe sits on the side of the river Nith, so you can choose to BYO picnic and eat by the river, or go in for coffee and cake.

I have hedged my bets and made two versions, they are both more or less the same roads, just the order we ride them changes, will choose which on Sunday morning depending on the forecast (Wind directionπŸ‘).

Route 'A' >>Here<<

Route 'B' >>Here<<

If the weather stays fair it should be a scenic ride, hope some of you can join me.

P.S. John H reminded me how busy the Boat House can get on a Sunday lunch time, they do take away, or play safe and BYO just in case?

 Long Meg Picnic Ride

I will be riding to the Long Meg Picnic (BYO) from Dalston leaving at 9:30. Never been before so hopefully I have the location correct?

Route takes me out west of the M6, through Penrith via Thacka Lane which is a short stretch of unpaved Bridalway, about 50 years since I was last down this lane so hopefully it is passable, if not an alternative road route is only a couple of miles more. Reach Long Meg at 27 miles, 20 miles home via Kirkoswald and Armathwaite.

Route <<Here>>

If anyone would like to join me, one or two hills but nothing to riders of your calibre πŸ˜„

Summer Solstice Picnic at Long Meg, Wed 21st June

Hoping that the weather will be good and that there will be a good turn out tomorrow. We are suggesting between 12 and 1.00 (midday not midnight!) for a BYO picnic and club gathering. We have had a couple of these events post-covid and they certainly proved popular.

Keep your eye on the blog in case any members suggest a ride based around  this meet.

Peter Moore

Pete Moore sadly died from a heart attack on Monday 5th June. He was an active member of EV for many years, but was diagnosed with failing kidneys a few years ago and had been on home dialysis with ups and downs in his health.

I’ve been visiting Pete and his wife Joy several times to help wire up his complex digital model railway layout which had become his primary hobby. Never ever expected the sad phone call just received from Joy.

Will circulate more details when known.

Bike Ride 09:30 hours on Sunday 4th June 2023

64 mile 3 bike ride starting at 09:30 hours on Sunday from The Green at Wetheral.

Heading over the Scottish border via Carlisle airport (no flight options), Hethersgill, Penton, into Scotland near Kershope foot to Newcastleton for lunch (27 mile). Return via Bewcastle, Birdoswald (50 mile (quick ice cream/coffee stop)), Lanercost, Brampton, Hayton, Great Corby & the bone shaker viaduct into Wetheral. Route/map/GPX file >> HERE <<  A bit "lumpy" but nothing too serious regarding climbs.

For refreshments there are 2 cafes, a spar & convenience store & 3 pubs/hotels at Newcastleton or BYO for a picnic on the beautiful riverside. Venues might be busy so we can decide on arrival.

The weather forecast (at this time) is for plenty of sunshine, dry & warm with light winds. So no excuses get yourself out πŸ˜ƒ. If you decide to come along, bring plenty of fluids & sun block as parts of this route are remote without services.

Cheers, John H (text or WhatsApp 07855534727)
