3 bike ride Wednesday 1 May

Click the link on the runs list for the route which is easily editable if it rains which is getting ever less likely(famous last words!). We intend quite an ambitious and hilly route but not too long 90km and 1820m of ascent. Up over Tan hill to Reeth/Grinton for coffee over to Askrigg for lunch and back over Buttertubs and Lamps Moss back to Nateby. Great run out! hope to see someone!.........
Meet at the Cloisters in Kirkby Stephen 0930 (parking as usual near the Grammar School)

New Runs List, 2nd Quarter 2019

The new Runs List is now available on the Club Web Site where you can download it and/or print it.
Please note and read the additional points about riding in a group. The committee feel strongly that we should all act on this.
Many thanks to all our leaders for contributing to the programme.  We hope there are rides to suit all our members. If you would like to join the team of leaders please have a word with any committee member.

2 Bike Ride, Sunday 28th April

Start at Wetheral at 9.30 and then the route is as advertised: going north by Irthington and Walton to reach Slack House Farm cafe for elevenses; then continue by Birdoswald and Lanercost to Farlam and Talkin Tarn for lunch (BYO option of course as weather looks pretty good); after lunch continue SW to Armathwaite and return north back to Wetheral. About 43 miles in total.
Hope to see some of you out if you are not in Fife.

Dick's Funeral

I am passing this information on via Les,,,,

Dick's funeral will be next Friday, May 3rd at Nenthead Cemetery (on the main road from Alston to Nenthead) at 11am and afterwards at Nenthead Village hall where there will be food and people talking about their memories of Dick. It will not be a religious ceremony. (This info was passed to me via the Humanist celebrant)
There will be the opportunity to share your memories of Dick if you wish. No pressure others will be speaking too.

Dick Philips Death

Dick has just died, an outcome he has been wishing for since last year. So perhaps one should think 'contentedly died' rather than 'sadly died'  .... though will leave sadness for those who knew him.

An obituary will appear in the next Cumberland & Westmorland Herald.

It is hoped to arrange the funeral in Nenthead Village Hall on May 3rd ie a week Friday, but may be delayed until the following Monday. Will post further details when available, or contact the funeral directors whose details will be in the obituary.

Those on the Fife away week who wish to attend will be back in time.

Fond memories of a sometimes bloody minded, but always well informed, well meaning and generous contributor to so many aspects of cycling, his beloved Iceland  and the local Alston community.

3 bike ride next Wednesday 24th

With 500m of ascent and a total distance of 104km, the hills (if any) in this ride come towards the end. We will stop at Bank Mill Nurseries for a late lunch after 62km and because of the route there will always be the opportunity for short cuts home for those that need the time to pack for the week away, so no excuses!
Outline of route below - this may be the last of the good weather so I hope to see lots out!
Start 0930 Dalston carpark

Monday 22 April 2019

2 Bike Ride Wednesday 24th April

This will be more a one and a half bike ride as I need to get home to welcome  my overnight guests.
Leaving Dalston to Watchtree via Beaumont  then on to Glasson for lunch, either BYO or Highland Laddie.
Home via Biglands taking advantage of the dry weather. Quite a strong Easterly wind forecast so easy out but harder home!

About 35 to 40 miles

Rides on Sunday 21st

Rosie and myself will be leading 2 rides from Beacon Edge cemetery starting at 9.30. Both will be heading to Dufton for an early lunch. The cafe is open, but it will be warm and sunny and we are going to sit on the grass and have a picnic. There are public loos. Rosie will cycle directly to Dufton and I will take a route through Appleby.

Dick Philips Update

Went to visit Dick at Grisedale Croft care home in Alston  this afternoon.

Following an infection, Dick seems to be ailing fast and really does looks a shadow of his former self, bedridden, sleeping most of the day and eating almost nothing. A few whispered words was all he managed, though he does still recall the good days - eg managing to tell me that his longest cycling day was 220 miles.

His friend Liz (ex secretary of Dick's) who cared for him in his Nenthead house for a few years recently whilst he was initially poorly, is in daily contact, given as next of kin and will let me know if & when 'something' happens.

Wanted: Someone to Audit our Accounts

Ian Ludlam has audited our accounts for a number of years and has signalled his intention to resign from this job. I am sure you will join me in thanking Ian for his hard work over the years auditing the accounts on behalf of Eden Valley Cycling UK

As the Auditor of the club accounts, the Treasurer (me) will send you the summary spreadsheet, together with the Bank reconciliation statement, invoices etc and the Cycling UK summary sheet. The Auditor will check that all transactions are as recorded and the accounts are balanced for the year. The AGM is scheduled for 26th October and I anticipate balancing the accounts by the middle of September, giving our Auditor time to check everything in time for the AGM

Please contact me if you are willing to take on this role. I have contacted Cycling UK for advice and have been told that anyone in the club with experience of bookkeeping would be ideal for this role

Fife Again

Unfortunately Ian and Ann Ludlam have had to cancel so risk losing their total payment.

If anyone, whether couple, two singles or even an individual considered coming but were put off by the £160 per person cost, do contact Ian and hopefully  work out a ‘deal’ acceptable to  both. Financially I don’t need to be involved, just have to know who takes  their place.

Sunday 14th April: Langwathby Village Hall BIG BREAKFAST

This is in aid of their fund raising to have a new roof. As we like to keep warm and dry for our AGMs it would be good if we could support this. The full breakfast will be available between 10am and 2pm for £7 (vegetarian options etc available) .
Bill H has kindly agreed to rearrange his ride this Sunday to start at FRENCHFIELD and pass through Langwathby at some stage - Bill will post details of this ride later this week. He has rearranged his Tebay-Dent-Ingleton ride for 7th July.
It would be good too if any members hoping to ride to the alternative coffee stop could get to Langwathby instead (go on - spoil yourself!).

Mountain Bike Ride over the Orton and Crosby Ravensworth Fells

Mountain Biking Ride Friday 12th April

We are aiming for a 10 o’clock start from the car park in the centre of Orton Village (by the Chocolate factory). The plan is to travel to Sproat Ghyll Farm to pick up the Bridleway which goes to Oddendale. From here we will pick up another BW towards Crosby Ravensworth. In the village I am planning to stop for a coffee break at the Butcher’s Arms. A mixture of roads and BW will take us to the track that goes to Ashby Winderwath Common and to the limestone pavement and back to Orton a distance of Approx 25 km

Please bring something to eat and drink and have some warm clothes too as we are quite exposed on the top of the limestone pavement. I hope to see lots of our aspiring Mountain Bikers out. The weather doesn’t look to be too bad at the moment. This ride is suitable for all abilities.

Wednesday 10th April, 2 Bike Ride from Sedburgh

The ride starts at 9.30 from the church gates in the centre of Sedbergh. The route is along the south side of the Lune skirting Barbon and Casterton to a coffee stop at Ireby Green. We then continue  along quiet lanes to Westhouse, Ingleton, High and Low Bentham to Melling Wrayton and on to Kirkby Lonsdale for lunch. The return is along the north side of the Lune to Sedbergh.
The total distance is about 45 miles on easy riding roads.
Spring has arrived down here in South Westmorland. The hedges are green, blossom is out and the roads are dry. Do come and enjoy the ride.

Ernest.

Wednesday 10th April - 3-bike ride: out of curiosity

The 115 km ride with 2085 m of ascent was borne of curiosity and has resulted in a large circular ride round the core of the Lakeland fells.  It will be a long day, with three stops!!!  Seven hours of cycling plus stops.
Naming the low points:  Keswick, Loweswater, Ennerdale Bridge, Calder Bridge, Eskdale, Little Langdale, Skelwith Bridge, Ambleside, Thirlmere, Keswick. The high points include Whinlatter, Hard Knott, Wrynose Pass and Dunmail Raise, plus a few other "bits".  It will be a slow long day.  Please meet at my house in Keswick, Grange Park, CA12 4AY, grid reference 277233 for a 9.30 am start. From climbing the Ambleside Road, turn right and head downhill into town, along Manor Brow.  After 300m turn right, just before the dip, to Fenton (cul-de-sac).  However, fork immediately right into Grange Park. Do not go along Fenton.  Drive 200 m along Grange Park, park on the left; the house is on the right, with white van on drive. See you on Wednesday, Rob.
