Wed 2 nd Jan - Dallas's Grade 2 Solway ride brought forward to Jan 1 st

The forecast for Wednesday is frost with a temperature of - 2 deg at 9am.
As the roads are still wet I’m not prepared to lead a ride in icy conditions.
Filling in CUK accident forms is a chore!
However I am prepared to lead a ride tomorrow, New Years Day.
Ian and I will be in the New Car park Dalston at 10am.
I plan to do a gentle Solway ride with one stop at the chapel at Port Carlisle which will be
open and the heating on. So bring some refreshments.
How far we go depends on who turns up and how they are feeling! Probably 30-40miles.
Tea and Christmas cake at Dalston afterwards.
CJ is kindly posting this as I can’t get “New Post” to come up on the lap top.

If arriving by motor vehicle please park down the hill away from the Cross Keys.
Compliments of the season to those coming and those not.

Cafe Update - Christmas/New Year holiday period

Booths is open on Boxing Day (Wednesday). Eden Gallery Tea Rooms for Sunday December 30th.  Advance notice for January: we are pretty sure that Betty Ann's Tea Room at Brougham is now closed, so we are intending to try The Magic Bean, Poets' Walk in Penrith on Sunday 13th January. We also need to check the Mill Yard Cafe at Morland for January opening (scheduled as the alternative on 16th January and for Bill H's ride on the 27th January). Watch the blog!

Riding tomorrow? Sunday 23 December Greystoke to UpFront

For those not wishing to join Ludo tomorrow (see post below) I am intending a leisurely two bike ride leaving Greystoke at 10 and taking a 13 mile route via Berrier, Lamonby and Skelton to the coffee stop at UpFront. We will decide our route back to Greystoke depending on the mood of the party (or, if just the two of us, Nigel can decide). May see some of you at coffee if not before.

John R’s Mountain Bike Ride on 28th December now 4th Jan

I posted a while ago that I was postponing my mountain bike ride of the Askham area. Just in case any club members missed this post and the date of the rearranged ride.

It will be a week later on Friday 4th January and starting from the parking area on the Fell road above Helton. I will post more details in the week before the ride.
The area is suitable for mountain riders of all abilities. Even though Phil B’s recent mtb ride used the area starting from a different place and adding Whale Moor will make it a different ride.

Post Easter Away Meet

Brrr! ‘Twas  much warmer in La Palma (smallish quiet Canary Island with whacking great volcanic caldera stuffed in the middle) - lots of wiggly roads and long climbs, but not many cyclists. Fantastic walking destination though, one of the best winter sun breaks we’ve been on.

Anyroadup, post Easter. Sadly 3 of our members need to cancel, so be great if we could fill their spaces and thus return their deposits.

So if any of those so far undecided could be tempted, please let me know.

Enjoy the festive period one and all.

Club ride - Sunday 23rd December

I don’t suppose many members will want to go riding on Sunday.   However should anyone fancy a trip out  I intend to cycle from my home in Gretna to the bistro cafe at Eskdalemuir via Corrie.   The return to Gretna will be via Langholm.  It will be a one-stop ride.   The total distance will be approx 50 miles and the route will be undulating.   If anyone wants to join me, phone 07709710301 or email and I will give you directions to my house.    At the moment the forecast is for it to be mostly dry.

Wednesday 19th December 2018 Coffee stop

Melmerby Stores (cafe) is listed for our coffee stop tomorrow. It is not open tomorrow. BUT the Bakery in the village is. The coffee is good (well I think so) and there are lots of options, so, do not be disappointed come to the village anyway.
Hope to see you there.

Wed 19 th Dec - Ride from Carlisle to Talkin Tarn

Since Peter is unable to lead his ride, I am offereing a shortened version of the route with one stop only for lunch at Talkin Tarn.
The route will cut out Rockcliffe & Heathersgill & take more direct routes to Brampton & Talkin Tarn.
The start will be at the end of Mayors Drive in Bitts Park just south of the River Caldew bridge to the racing track.
The distance to Talkin will be approx 21 miles with a return to Carlisle of approx 14 miles.
I hope to see some of you there.

WEDNESDAY 19th, RIDE FROM TEBAY SPORTS GROUND !0.00am

Hi
Weather looks ok, some showers but above freezing.
I think the days are too short for 2 stops so I intend to change to  one, an early lunch stop at Kirkby Stephen, The Mulberry Bush Cafe.
Happy Christmas     David

Sunday's Ride Update

Weather looks horrible now but it could improve a lot by tomorrow. I hope to be at Greystoke by 9.45 am and we can assess the weather and, more importantly, the road conditions then. We will then decide if there is a need to change plans. My mobile number is 07906 896503.

2 Bike Ride on Sunday 16th December and a note about the alternative coffee stop

I have decided to make this a one stop ride as the days are short and we might be able to coincide or at least overlap with the self led riders at Granny Dowbekins. I hope we will arrive at Poole Bridge by 12 noon taking an 18 mile loop from Greystoke in the morning. Hopefully the weather will be bright and we might get Christmas card views of the northern fells from the Hutton Roof and Berrier area. In the afternoon the ride back to Greystoke will be about 17 miles via Askham, Penrith and Newton Reigny. As it is likely that we will cut through Lowther and Newton Rigg you might like to think about which steed to bring - although there are only very short sections of rough.

Wednesday 12 December 2018

Friday 14th mtb ride.

Fridays ride is leaving Askham village car park at 10am and we will ride round the new trails at Lowther before riding over Askham fell to Howtown. Then along the lakeside road to Pooley Bridge where we will have lunch. Then back over Askham Fell.
This ride is suitable for mtb newbies. We should be back at the car by 3pm. Hope to see lots of you out.

Monday 10 December 2018

2 bike ride on Wednesday 12 December

My one stop 35 - 40 mile flat scenic ride this Wednesday will start with coffee and festive mince pies and cake from 10.00 until we leave at 10.45am. (If arriving by car please will you park on the road outside the Parish Hall, not in the car park). Our house, Rowan Lea is on Church lane, CA5 6PN, opposite the church and grave yard. The large gate will be open to the back garden so just make your way through to the back, with your bike. We will leave at 10.45 and take small lanes towards Newton Arlosh then around Anthorn before stopping for bring your own lunch in the RSPB Campfield Visitor Centre (we can make a tea or coffee for a small donation). We will then have a wonderful ride along the coast with views to Bonnie Scotland before making our way across country back to Thursby for around 3.00pm and more festive refreshments for those that want. If you cant make it I wish you a happy cycling Christmas !

Alternative Coffee Venue - Sunday 9th December

Betty Ann's Tearoom at Brougham hall has now closed. So I have just made a quick decision and suggest that we use Booth's this Sunday. It may not be ideal but at least we know it will be open! We are looking for alternatives for the 13th January and would appreciate any ideas. Thanks to CJ for noticing the closure of Betty Ann's.

Sunday 9th 2 bike ride

Hello All. Rosie and myself are leading a ride from Lazonby River Eden bridge car park leaving at 10am and going to Talkin Tarn for lunch at about 12. We are taking butties but there is a cafe with a limited selection, as only the downstairs cafe is open. Weather looks fine but cold. About 30 miles.

Tuesday 4 December 2018

Cat 2 ride - Wed 5 th Dec

Subject to weather conditions, I intend to lead the ride as published. However if some of back lanes are icy ( as they probably are to day ), I may cut out the routes through sheltered lanes and cut out the 11's stop at Wetheral.  I would take a more direct route to the lunch stop at Plumpton using treated roads or ones with some that have traffic flow in the A6 / M6 corridor. The route planned is 38 miles ( slightly more than published ). I hope conditions permit completion of the full ride and hope to see some of you at the start.

Sunday 2 December 2018

3 Bike Ride - Wed 5 Dec

Hi All
Days are quite short at the moment so I propose to omit the 2nd cafe stop. ie just stopping for 11's at Caldbeck. Bring your own 'on ride lunch time' refreshments. Lights would be a good idea.
Best wishes
David
