New Lists - A Happy New Year

Thank you to all those of you who have responded to the request for Emergency contacts and list checking. To those that have not - it would save us time on rides that you attend if you did respond so that we don't need to keep asking you for information.
The new contact lists and ride leader registers (for recording those present on rides and giving emergency contacts) are now available on the documents page of the website.

A happy New Year to all - good riding in 2017!

Tomorrow's ride

I hope you have all had a great Christmas.
Just a reminder that tomorrow's ride is NOT starting from Thiefside as the café is closed. Instead we will be leaving Penrith (Cross Keys at Carleton on the A686) at 10 am and following a fairly direct route to 11s at Culgaith, then head fellside to Appleby for lunch and back to Penrith.
Nigel may be offering an alternative faster/extended route if there is sufficient interest.
Please don't try to text me as my phone has died.
Hope to see you tomorrow,
Alison

Ride on Wednesday 28 December

With Thiefside café closed between Christmas and New Year, the coffee stop is at Culgaith and my moderate ride has changed as I won't be starting from Thiefside.
Instead I will be leaving Penrith Cross Keys (Carleton Village on the A686) at 10 to get to Culgaith for coffee then down to Appleby for lunch (probably Bojangles - we will  need to phone from Culgaith to warn them of numbers for lunch) and back to Penrith, hopefully before dark...
You are all welcome to join - especially those who have still to reach their annual mileage targets...
In the meantime, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and look forward to seeing you out cycling, if not next Wednesday, then in the New Year.

Wed 21st Dec Rides

Hello All,
Myself and Rosie are leading separate rides. Both start from Penrith Cemetary on Beacon Edge, at 10am. Both rides will go to Morland for Coffee, and then Rosie will lead her group to Shap for lunch, and do about 30 miles and I intend to go to Orton and do about 50 miles, at a slightly faster pace. This is the plan, but its all weather dependant. You are all welcome to have tea and xmas cake at our place (15 Croft Terrace) afterwards.

Club Ride Sunday 18 December

Sunday's ride will start from the Tarn Lane Junction, Burton in Kendal at 1000. For those unfamiliar with the venue, if you enter Burton from the Crooklands roundabout (M6 Junction 36), you will pass through the village and come to a staggered crossroads.  Tarn Lane is on the right. You can park on the roadside.
This will be a one stop ride and our route will take us through Halton, Condor Greeen and Cockerham to Garstang, where we will have lunch at Booths - so bring your Booths Card for your free coffee.
After lunch we will return via The Bay Horse, Quernmore, Caton and Halton Park for a total distance of approx. 50 miles.
The terrain is predominantly flat - except where it isn't! - and the forecast is looking good, so I hope to see some of you on Sunday.

Easy Ride Wednesday 14th Dec

I doubt this will even aspire to moderate.
The plan is Dalston to Watchtree for elevenses, there will by coffee tea and chocolate and some tray bakes. Ryan could not guarantee there would be enough traybakes if a lot of us turn up so bring a snack if you think you might need it. There are usually plenty of bars of things.
We will then head to the Solway then back to Dalston for lunch. I am providing soup, mincepies and tea and coffee. It won't be more than 30miles.
If anyone felt like giving a small donation to Watchtree in lieu of lunch I'm sure they would appreciate it.

Ride Sunday 11th (to Lanercost)

The weather looks to be fair at the moment for a ride from Langwathby to Lanercost and back. Though I am sure the food at the Lanercost cafe is excellent I would recommend that you bring your own and we can get coffee and snacks at the cafe. This is a one stop ride as we start quite late. The route will depend on the whim of the leader but may reflect the wishes of those who turn out if you buy him a coffee. Likely to be up onto the fellside through Renwick and Castle Carrock on the way out and Hallbankgate and Armathwaite on the way back. Distance will be around 50±4 mi promise! (80 km or so for the scientists and europhiles)
Don't forget to bring lights (just in case!)

ALT/coffee stops - changes to venues

Hello all - if you have printed out your runs list, please can you make the following amendments - some café opening times have changed in the winter months.
Melmerby Tea Room now shuts at 10 am on Wednesdays so please swap the entry for Sunday 18 December - which will now be Melmerby - with Wednesday 21 December, which will now be Abbot Lodge.
Wednesday 28 December will now be at Culgaith as Thiefside is closed and my ride, due to leave from Thiefside, will also be rescheduled to take in Culgaith - route still to be determined.
Please keep checking the blog as at this time of year things are liable to change with café hours altering and weather conditions affecting the viability of the rides.
Hope to see lots of you at the Christmas dinner on 17th - please contact Geoff if you wish to attend - the deadline approaches.

Wednesday 7th December 2016 ride

In September we wrote about this ride 'Alison and I are intending to make a couple of comfortable rides, both moderate in pace, starting at the Cross Keys Carleton Penrith tomorrow. The coffee (11's) stop will be at the Pot Place and lunch at the Up Front Gallery, Unthank, when we respectively get there.
Alison is offering a more gentle pace than I, not that I am expecting a tearaway one. Mileages will depend on the group but I am expecting, for my longer ride, to be between 30 and 40 miles for the day.
Look forward to seeing you.'
The start time this time is 10.00 a..m.
The weather is looking to be ice free.
Bit of the same old, same old, for those of you who have ridden one or both of the times we have done this before this year, but there are merits to familiarity.  For those of you who have not done this before with us, there are merits in novelty too.
Look forward to seeing some of you tomorrow

Wednesday 7th Dec, from Tebay

Hi cyclists,
I am changing the lunch time venue to Newbiggin,(Norman's) so that there will be a shorter ride in the afternoon, thus reducing the ride to 45miles.
However, please bring lights just in case.
Weather looks promising ie no frost although it does forecast some rain. Most of the route is on salted roads, but I will review on site and abandon the ride if it appears to be seriously icy.

Club ride - Sunday 4th December

The ride will start from the Sycamore Tree Cafe, Longtown at 10.30am  The cafe is on the main street at the junction with Bank Street and is on the left when coming from the Carlisle direction.   There is ample parking in Bank St.   Because the route is short, we will be having refreshments before we set off so be there by 10am unless you are happy to go without.    The cafe opens at 9am.   If you want breakfast I suggest you phone beforehand tel 01228 791919 as the cafe can be busy.   I expect some members will ride to Longtown from home.

The route itself is mostly fairly flat and uninspiring but there are a few minor undulations to prevent riders getting too bored.    The forecast at the moment is for it to be dry and frost-free.   The pace I anticipate will be 11-12mph.   Lunch will be at 18 miles at the the Cross Keys Inn,  Canonbie where you can get a bar meal.    The total distance will be about 34 miles.   I look forward to seeing some of you on the ride.
