New Runs List and Riding in a Group

Thanks to our leaders the new list is now available on our website.

Following points made at the AGM it is a good time to remind members of the policy below. It is for our safety and it would help our leaders if you could abide by this sensible advice:

When the group is large, special thought should be given to splitting into several units to allow traffic to overtake. When the road is wide enough and the traffic is not too heavy ride in pairs (up to 4). It's safer, more sociable and it saves energy! (see blog Aug2 2017)
But if we are in a big group riding in single file because of the conditions then please leave at least a car sized break every 4 so that following vehicles can get past safely. It should be the responsibility of the fifth rider to draw back from the group to leave the space and others behind should not take this as a cue to overtake him/her and catch up with the group ahead.

Xmas Present Idea for the Cyclist who has everything

This link (http://loffi.cc/) takes you Kick-starter  page for cycling gloves developed by the son-in-law of one of my neighbours. They are hoping to ship orders by end of November so they would make ideal Christmas presents.

Tomorrow's ride (28 October)

Until November, rides still start at 9.30, but tomorrow you get an extra hour in bed! So I hope a few will join me at Greystoke car park for a 9.30 departure. We will be going south across the A66 to the shores of Ullswater, following the road through Pooley Bridge to Eamont Bridge and hoping to meet up with the café people at Brougham Hall. From there, I plan a route through Penrith towards Plumpton and lunch at UpFront gallery. Each of those legs will be 12/13 miles although longer loops are available. I was planning an 8 mile route return to Greystoke - about 33 miles in all.
I don't plan to be out late, but it is still recommended at this time of year - after the clocks go back - that you start to carry lights as routine.

AGM - lunch - committee officers

AGM - Saturday  27th October
First a reminder of the Bring and Share Lunch at 12.30 which is always a good get together. If you cannot bring food I am sure there will be plenty but we ask that you pay £5. In either case sign up on the list by filling in the form  here(link)   It would be useful for catering/numbers if you could indicate on the link above if you aim to attend the lunch before Thursday 25th.
There may be a short ride in the morning - see the Blog
I will open the Hall from about 11.45 so if we could have a few helpers to lay out the tables and if food needs heating then please ensure you are there early. (Totals for catering available here)

The AGM kicks off at 2.00pm and I have no special items apart from what is mentioned in the Agenda which you can print off here.  and last years AGM Minutes here

However it is significant that both Chair (Alison) and Secretary (self) are stepping down this year and so far we have no replacemements!

Please think about whether you might be able to give a small amount of time to the basic functioning of the club. It is after all run for the members and needs willing volunteers to function. We are grateful to all volunteers who give their time to run all aspects of the club from leading rides through organising events and weeks away and to all the members of the committee.

AGM Ride 27 October 2018

I was thinking that some may appreciate a little ride before the AGM.  Not wanting to stress the food arrangements I thought I would take a short ride to Plumpton, the Pot Place, starting from Langwathby at 10.00 a.m. which would allow a gentle pace, a considered chat and coffee (other beverages are available) and trundle back in time to assist with lay out and eating. I am not stuck on the idea, happy to consider other suggestions.

Wednesday's 3 Bike Ride

Come and join me for a ride through the Lakes on Wednesday. Leaving Shap car park at 9:30 we'll cycle to Glenridding for coffee after 20 miles. It is then a further 16 miles or so (over Kirkstone Pass) to lunch at Wilf’s Café in the Mill Yard at Stavely, and then 17 miles back to Shap. Don’t be put off by Kirkstone – the main part of the ascent from Brotherswater is only 2.6km long and we’ll regroup at the top before enjoying a fabulous descent down to Troutbeck.
I hope to see you at the start.

Helmet Recall

Pam R sent me this note - to clarify, if you have one of these helmets Arragons will help identify if it is one of the suspect helmets.

Further post to follow re AGM.......

Sunday 21 October from Dalston

The ride will be as advertised.  Out via Wetheral to Brampton covering 19 miles before coffee stop at Mr Brown's on the main street.  South to Penrith via Castle Carrock, Croglin and Lazonby to Booth's in Penrith for lunch after a further 22 miles.  Less hilly in the afternoon back to Dalston.  Total distance is around 60 miles.  Looks like it might be a good idea to bring a raincoat.

Ride Wed 17th October

Yes - I’m back! And I hope to see some of you at Stonyholme car park in Carlisle tomorrow for a lovely autumn ride to Newcastleton. Steady pace (I’ve left my carbon in Corsica so have the choice of my Brompton or the Dave Yates - mmmm....difficult choice 😉 ) and bring your own  elevenses to eat at Bewcastle Church. Hilly in the morning, less hilly pm but undulating.
According to Bike Hike the route should be about 57 miles, but it might turn out to be less.
Looking forward to seeing you.

Sunday 14 th October - Ride from Cross keys Carleton

Since Clive is indisposed due to a heavy cold; I intend to go to the Cross Keys for 09:30 to discuss ride options with anyone else who turns up there.
Since the Self Led ride meet is at Granny Dowbekins, it would make sense to join those who have ridden there.
Depending on weather conditions a lunch venue could be decided upon whilst at Pooley Bridge.
I hope to see some of you tomorrow.

Rides on Wed 10th Oct

Great forecast. Rosie is leading a 2 bike ride to Morland cafe via Langwathby, Culgaith and Kirkby Thore for an early lunch at 11.30 ish. I am leading a 3 bike ride doing a loop to Talkin Tarn for Coffee, then Alston for lunch. Then back to Penrith via Hartside. The A686 is now open. Both rides leave the lay-by at Beacon Cemetery, Penrith at 9.30. See you at the start, or the stops.

Sunday 7 th October ( Annan ride ) - Erratum

This is a follow up to my blog of 5 th October to correct an error in the stage mileages. The ditances should read : -

Start to 11's = 14 miles
11's to Lunch = 23 miles  ( not 13 as shown originally )

Lunch to Finish = 25 miles

Total distance = 62 miles as stated originally.

Don't be concerned about the lumpy looking route profile it is highly exaggerated with a vertical exaggeration of 1:160.

I hope the weather is set to be good tomorrow !

Sunday 7 th October - Anan ride

The ride will be as published : -

 Start
Annan Town Square ( near Town Hall, Police Station and War Memorial - plenty of parking ) - departing at  09:30 to Elevenses via Dalton to Lockerbie
Stage distance 14 miles

Elevenses
At Lockerbie moving on via Applegarth Town, Millhouse Bridge, Templand, Parkgate and Ae to Dumfries
Stage distance 13 miles

Lunch
At Dumfries moving on via Kingholm Quay, Glencaple, Caerlaverock Castle, Bankend, Ruthwell, Preistside, Powfoot and Newbie to Annan.
Stage distance 25 miles

Total distance 62 miles.  Although ride is a fair distance with it's Grade 2 category the pace will be moderate.

In the event of extremely wet or exceptionally windy weather, there is not much scope to shorten the route to Dumfries ( except on unpleasant main roads ). After 11’s a shorter return to Annan could be taken by travelling east , SE and then SW back to Annan.

I hope to see some of you at the start and that we are able to do the full ride.

You may have noticed that the Runs List says this is to be announced. So the announcement is: Maulds Meaburn as they are doing another of their popular big breakfasts.

Wednesday 3 October - two bike ride

My thanks to Bill who has kindly agreed to lead this ride as family commitments prevent me coming out on Wednesdays now. He won't be doing the shortest route, or the longest ride either, but please come along for a 2 -bike ride along our country lanes. Meeting 9.30 at Cross Keys Carleton as advertised with coffee at the Pot Place and lunch at UpFront.
