Trivets Wednesday 12th June 2019

Planning is underway for this year's Trivets event which will take place on Wednesday 12th June.
As in 2016 the event will start & finish at Brambles Cafe in Newton Rigg College. The entry fee is £20 and includes refreshment during the morning and afternoon and lunch at Newton Rigg in the middle of the day.
There is a choice of rides - either 100km or 100miles.
Volunteers are required for the following roles:

Ride Leaders - total of 12 required to lead 6 groups of up to 8 riders. If you would like to lead one of the groups please get in touch with John Roelich jroelich69@gmail.com ) indicating which distance (60 miles or 100miles) with preference for who they would like to ride with and possibly the speed they might anticipate travelling at.

Broom Wagon(s) - to provide support in event of mechanical breakdown or emergency.
Registration Officer - to be at Newton Rigg at start to record riders as they arrive & assign to relevant groups. Could also issue certificates at end of event.
If you would like to volunteer for either of these roles, then please let either John Roelich or me know.

Catering - Lunch will be provided by Newton Rigg, however we need people to help serve refreshments (11's) in Milburn village hall in the morning, and in the afternoon in Dalston village hall. Please contact Clare Barron if you would like to offer your services.

It should be noted that volunteers for any of the above roles will not have to pay any entry fee. Also no-one should feel any pressure to volunteer if they would prefer to ride!

Cheers,
Bill

Paul Cumella

Paul was admitted to West Cumbria Hospital, Hensingam, Whitehaven on Friday. (As  most of you may know, he is at present on remission for non Hodgekinsons Lymphoma). He had his usual blood test before seeing his Consultant for a quarterly check up. Paul received a telephone call later last Friday to inform him that his white blood platelets were dangerously low and that he should attend A&E Assessment Unit at Whitehaven.

At present  Paul Is being kept in until they can rectify this problem to a safe level. (They should be between 150 and 400  - Paul's white platelets are 4) .
If any club members would like to telephone Paul, his mobile number is 07885 657924.
Sue.

Date for your diary - Friday 22 March at Langwathby Village Hall

One of our members, Jeff Trueman, cycled across America last year and is giving a talk about his experiences at Langwathby Village Hall on Friday 22 March (start date to be confirmed but I think it will be 7.30).
I imagine a few people will be interested in his talk which is in aid of the Langwathby Village Hall roof fund - a worthy cause.

Ride on Sunday 24th February

This grade 2 ride will leave Frenchfield at 10.00 am as advertised. We may have a stop for BYO elevenses at Maulds Meaburn (no big breakfast I'm afraid!) if we can find a nice picnic table in the expected spring sunshine. Then onto the Orton Scar Cafe for lunch. The afternoon ride returns via Shap before dropping down to follow the Lowther valley back to Penrith. About 40 miles at a steady pace.

Wednesday 13 February 3-bike ride, Northern Fells tour: looking good for the Mungrisdale start!

The plan is to set off at 10 am from the roadside parking area, NY 365 298, near Low Beckside Farm. It is about 500m from Mugrisdale Village Hall, heading south, towards the A66, from the Village Hall. Parking is also available at the Village Hall for a nominal contribution.  The 90 km route, 1350m of ascent, is a clockwise circuit of the Northern Fells, passing Keswick, Whinlatter, Lorton, Mockerkin, Cockermouth, Uldale and Caldbeck. Stops are available at all the above locations, and will be decided by the group:  we will pass or stop at the Whinlatter  Forest Centre between 11 am and 11.15 am. Either Cockermouth or Uldale are possible lunch stops.  Looking forward to a great day out! Rob

Sun 10 the Feb - Self Led Cafe Venue still closed

Here's a reminder that the Magic Bean in Penrith won't be open until 16 th Feb, so anyone riding to Penrith will have to choose another cafe.

In an earlier post on 11 th Jan I wrote : -

" To day ( Fri 11 th Jan ), I observed a notice at the Magic Bean cafe that the premises will be closed until Feb 16 th since the propreitors are taking their annual holiday.
Riders could go to the Gallery Cafe beside that parish church that the club have used previously.
Another alternative ( possibly with faster service than the Gallery ) would be The New Squares Cafe at 6 Bowling Green Lane in the New Squares development near to the Sports Direct shop. "

Maybe the Gallery Cafe is favourite.

Sunday's ride from langwathby

Depending on the conditions the ride on Sunday from Langwathby (bus shelter!) will leave at 10.00 and essentially go up the Fellside to Talkin then return via Wetherall Shield.(here be lunch stop 😛 It turns out that Sally's in Wetherall Bridge is closed Jan & Feb on Sundays.)

We can still make up the mileage if this is a group decision and there are lots of hilly😩 and not so hilly 😇ways of getting back to Langwathby. It may even have stopped raining by then. See met office forecast (I've hidden the wind!) Route as planned 70km 880m ascent.we might push it up to 50mi

Hope to see hordes of people out!

Dick Philips - Latest

Visited Dick again yesterday.

He is now totally bed ridden, not even able to use a zimmerframe  and appears to be ailing fairly rapidly, although thankfully mental faculties still reasonably sharp and long term memory impeccable.

If anyone who knows Dick has been thinking of visiting, but somehow hasn't got round to it, I would urge you to go sooner rather than later. There are no road problems over Hartside.

Or at the very least a letter? Dick Philips, c/o Grisedale Croft Residential Home, Alston, Cumbria CA9 3QS

Ride on Sunday

The forecast for Sunday is for sub zero at 10am and snow at 1pm, so we won't be going to Caldbeck.
However myself and Rosie will be on the Beacon Edge at 10am and we will play it by ear, depending on who is there. It will probably be a shortish ride to a coffee stop and return by lunch before the snow arrives. We hope some of you will join us. if you are coming please check the blog or phone us
(01768868642) in the morning before you leave in case conditions and plans change.
