A66 Dualling Consultation (potential for Penrith to Scotch Corner without riding on the A66 / local routes)

Highways England (HE) want our views on its proposals for making the A66 dual carriageway from Penrith to Scotch Corner. HE do not want cyclists on the A66 once the works are complete. The changes will also affect our local riding. The proposals can be seen on HE's website "www.highwaysengland.co.uk/A66-NTP". From the website you will see there are consultation meetings at various places starting on Monday the 27th September (in Penrith) running through most days to Thursday the 14th October at various places. Please have a look. Please tell me of your thoughts, if you like.

  1. Kemplay Roundabout Penrith
The Highways Agency plan to remove A66 through traffic from this roundabout by building an underpass. The existing roundabout will keep its current path but 2 sections will become bridges and it will only carry local traffic.
The current roundabout, with grass, trees and a lovely bike path will become a hole in the ground. The bike path will be replaced by a shared bike/pedestrian track on the innermost ring, with just 50cm of kerb separating cyclists and walkers from motorised vehicles. The bike path will go from being a little pocket of joy to something perfunctory and not very nice. Now is the time to lobby for something better, such as better separation.
See the project website at www.highwaysengland.co.uk/A66-NTP and email the planners at A66NTP@highwaysengland.co.uk
