Today's 2 bike ride from NewtonReigny - I'll be there!

I don't go out when the roads are white. They aren't white so I will be out. I hope I'm not alone...

Update for 3 Bike Ride Wednesday 31 Jan

The latest forecast suggests that we could have sleet showers but the freezing level should be high enough to make the route safe although we can expect a bit of wind.  I intend to be at Dalston as planned so I will discuss conditions with anyone who turns up (or maybe talk to myself!).  Anyone intending to meet at Caldbeck should be aware that we may not arrive there in which case they should make their own way to Plumpton and meet for lunch around 12.30.

Wednesday - a two bike option???

Don't you love an optimist? If John says it will be frost free, then there isn't an excuse for the rest of us to stay at home, is there...
I have an idea for a two bike ride - I will be visiting Plumpton and UpFront next Wednesday so I need to devise a slightly different route...if you are happy to join me on a magical mystery tour, I will be departing from the Church at Newton Reigny at 10 am and taking in UpFront for 11s (to meet the café folk) and Pot Place for lunch (where we might meet the 3 bike ride, although timing might make that unrealistic) and making it up as I go along... the weather could be showery, so please check the blog on Wednesday in case I make some changes. I will shorten the route if it's too unpleasant!

31 January Ride from Dalston

Looks like it is turning colder again but hopefully frost free so, at the moment, I intend to go ahead. The ride is 47 miles with 3700 feet of climbing.  From Dalston to Caldbeck (coffee stop if wanted) direct via Warnell Fell then easier riding to Pot Place, Plumpton for lunch. Return via Lazonby and Armathwaite. Route subject to change if weather conditions are poor. I will update the blog if necessary, otherwise hope to see some of you at Dalston.

Tomorrow's alternative coffee stop is BOOTHS

Sunday 28 January the coffee stop is down at Brougham Hall but I am sure they don't open again until February. So if you are out, please head for Booths instead.

Important notice regarding JohnR’s ride on Sunday 28th January

I have had to alter the starting place which was due to be at Cotehill. There are roadworks in the centre of the village and traffic lights have been installed in the exact spot where we usually park. As a result I have decided to start from the River Eden bridge in Armathwaite (GR NY 507461). There are likely to be other cars parked at the bridge as this is a popular egress point for those paddling on the RiverEden. We will follow exactly the same route from here as planned and will have 11’s at Lanercost tearooms instead of the Duke of Cumberland pub. I am hoping that the tea room at Walton will be open for lunch, if not we will divert to the Garden Centre in Brampton for lunch. It is an undulating route of 40 miles with one significant hill at Forest Head.

Weather forecast is for gusty winds from 1500hrs and strong SW winds in the morning. It is forecast to be a little warmerthan today however. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday.  John Roelich

Wednesday 24th Jan 2 bike ride HIGH WINDS

Ride Cancelled due to Forecast of winds steady at over 40mph and gusting to 50mph on the coast.
Club group riding at '2 Bike Ride' level would be too hazardous and arduous.
Members who are desperate to make the most of ice-free roads might want to make their own arrangements to meet at Mrs Miller's at Culgaith or organise their own off-road MTB route on sheltered forest tracks.
All very frustrating but this is winter!

Club ride - Sunday 21st January - FURTHER INFORMATION

Because of the forecast, tomorrows ride from Wetheral will be changed.     I am still undecided about a route.   It may be necessary to stick to gritted roads.   I will discuss options with whoever turns up at the start.   The distance will be 30-40 miles.

3 bike ride Sunday 21st January

At the moment (0400hrs) I am a little undecided about the route of tomorrows ride.   The forecast is for rain and for snow on higher ground.    Freezing temperatures until 10am but then rising to a max of 3 degrees by lunchtime.    It is likely that I will change - and shorten - the route.   I will put further information on the blog at about mid-day.

Two bike ride Wednesday 17th FURTHER INFORMATION

I have decided looking at the Met Office forecasts, that it is probably not a good idea to continue with this ride. Sorry that this is a bit last moment but I will turn up at the start to see what it looks like then and also to let those who have not read this know!

Two bike ride on Wednesday 17th

Looking at the forecast it should be OK by later in the morning so the route will be as published ie Starting at Frenchfields at 1000 we will make our way to Melmerby Tearooms for coffee.
Depending on the conditions en route to meet you from Culgaith I might decide  to reverse the route
The Plan: (60km - 600m ascent)

It goes without saying that if there is any doubt about the conditions we will stick to main salted roads.

EVCUK Campaign group

Hello All.

I would like to form a campaign group within the club, and I see its roles as being the maintenance and improvement of cycling facilities and infrastructure, from lobbying to urging members to report potholes to changing driver behaviour. It can be what we want it to be.

We are the Eden Valley CUK group but that doesn't preclude us from dealing with issues outside the Eden valley area but within the CA postcode.

If we wish it could also include attracting more and particularly beginner cyclists into the club.

You can be involved in any capacity that suits you. Whatever you feel passionate about.

So if you think that you would like to be involved please email me at

Photo Op at Brougham Bridge on Sunday

Another good reason to ride with myself or Rosie on Sunday is that Alison is going to put together a piece for the Herald, on how cyclists are overjoyed that Brougham Bridge is now open, and I have been asked to take some group photos at the Bridge for inclusion in the article. If you have a club shirt it would be a good time to show it off. So after lunch at Lowther we will all cycle together to the bridge.. See you at Greystoke.

Sunday 14th rides from Greystoke car park

Myself and Rosie will be leading 2 rides from Greystoke car park, starting at 10 am. Both rides are
heading towards Pooley Bridge and are one stop rides to an early lunch, 12ish at Lowther Castle cafe. Rosie will do a ride of about 28 miles at an easy pace, and I will lead a faster ride of about 40 miles in total. Hopefully both groups will arrive at the cafe at the same time where you can change groups if you wish.  Hope to see lots of you out.

3 Bike Ride on Wednesday 10th January 2018

10.00 am Start from Lazonby Bridge.
The route goes to Appleby (for Lunchtime) via Gamblesby, Melmerby, Skirwith and Blencarn.  If time allows we will go through Knock and Dufton.  The return will be via Culgaith, Langwathby and Great Salkeld.
If there are concerns about the fellside roads still being slippery in the morning we could ride the route the other way round.  All welcome for all or part of the ride.
Look forward to seeing you in the morning.

Two Bike Ride: Wednesday 10th January 2018

The ride starts at 10am from Morrisons car park in Kendal. (Just off the A6 as you enter Kendal from the north)
The route leaves Kendal along Natland road and heads south via Silverdale Woods to Arnside (15miles) for coffee at about 11-20am. We then ride along the flat roads around Morecambe Bay and along the Lythe Valley before going over to Wilf's at Staveley (34miles) for a late lunch at about 2.00pm. Riding the final 6 miles back into Kendal for about 3.15pm.
The total distance is 40miles.
If you would like a change from riding the Eden Valley routes do come along and enjoy the relatively easy riding in Silverdale, around Morecambe Bay and the Lythe Valley.

Ernest.

2 Bike Ride, Sunday 7th January

The forecast is cold, dry, sunny and calm. So I do intend to lead a ride from Dalston at 10.00am on Sunday. However, my plan is much altered so don't plan to meet the ride at Dirty Harry's or Talkin as we will not be going that way (the route would entail shady and possibly icy hollows). The temperature at 10.00am is forecast to be -2 degrees, so I hope to follow mainly gritted roads to Unthank (13 miles) for a coffee/early lunch. Then perhaps follow a more interesting route back when the sun has hopefully done its work. However, we may need to be flexible.

Tomorrow's Ride Route Alteration

Tomorrow's ride will go ahead, but the route has been altered and shortened.
Still starting from BinK at 1000 we will now head for Leighton Moss via Holme, Heversham, Arnside and Silverdale. After lunch our home leg will take us through Warton, Carnforth, Aughton and Capernwray before returning to Burton.
The forecast is for sunshine and showers pretty much all day with strong winds hence the change of route. The total distance will be under 40 miles, but given the conditions, quality is better than quantity. I don't think it's a day for mile munching!
Hope to see some of you tomorrow.

Two-bike ride tomorrow Wednesday 3 January

This is my usual cycle ride starting off by the Cross Keys at Carleton at 10, arriving at the Pot Place for coffee and at UpFront at Unthank for lunch. It is doubtful that we will be offering two rides of different paces tomorrow and I expect my ride to be gentle - which may be particularly welcome if the weather is bad! I hope to see a few of you.

Happy New Year - and THANK YOU

A VERY BIG 'thank you' to everyone who attended our lunch yesterday and for their generosity in donating £140 in support of the fund-raising Anne and I need to do to Ride London with the 'Genesis Research Trust'. Not only is our fund-raising well under way but we also had a lovely sociable time with lots of friends and we look forward to cycling with you all over the coming year.

Club Ride Wednesday 3 January

Wednesday's ride will start from Tarn Lane, Burton in Kendal at 1000.
As the forecast for Wednesday is unsettled, the route may be changed to allow us flexibility if needed. The route as outlined on the runs list will take us 25 miles from Burton at the mid point, but if the weather conditions look less favourable, we may take a more circular route around the Bay or Kirkby Lonsdale area. This will allow us to get back to base quicker if circumstances demand it. There will only be one stop on the ride and the distance will be a maximum of 50 miles on predominantly kind terrain.
Should the forecast deteriorate significantly I will reappraise the ride and update this blog tomorrow if necessary.
Hopefully we will see some of you on Wednesday.
Keith G.
PS Happy New Year!
