Main Ride 30 th October

Further to my previous post, I have advised the Station Cafe at Langwathby and the Mill Restuarnt at Morland that depending on the weather a party of between 8 and 10 riders as follows : -

1. Langwathby - Between 11:00 and 11:30 for " 11's "

2. Morland - Between 13:00 and 13:30. Morland will reserve 2 tables upstairs for us

Moderate ride tomorrow, Sunday 30 October

After your extra hour in bed, I am sure you will be bright-eyed and busy-tailed in the morning. We are meeting at 9.30 outside the Cross Keys at Carleton village, Penrith. It isn't far to the morning coffee stop at Langwathby so I will arrange some extra meanderings, but probably arrive at the coffee stop 10.30ish which should help to stagger our arrival with the main ride and prevent the Station Café being overcrowded. Further meanderings will bring us to Melmerby; the proprietors of the Tearoom are away on a much deserved holiday so I intend to use the Old Village Bakery which has been under new management since May and is very popular. If it is too popular for us to find a seat, we can go on to Culgaith, before our route back to the start.
Final route will be decided on the day to suit participants - all welcome!

Sunday 30 th October - Main Ride

Since Ludo is unable to lead his published ride so I will lead on his behalf.
The route will be as per the GPS map that he supplied to me : -

Start # 09:30 Calthwaite ( near Globe Inn )

11’s – Langwathby ( Railway Station café ) – leg distance 15 miles

Lunch – Morland ( Mill Restaurant ) – leg distance 15 miles

Return – To Calthwaite – 25 miles

# - Remember to set your clocks back 1 hour to change from BST to GMT at 02:00 on Sun 30 th Oct so as not to arrive too late at the start of the ride.

Since it will be getting dark earlier after changing to GMT it is advisable to come equipped with lights.
Depending on the time we are able leave lunch, it may be necessary to shorten the return leg to reduce the riding time in the dark.

Club Ride Wednesday 26 October

Wednesday's ride will start from Morrison's car park at 0930. Parking is not a problem, but I suggest you park at the rear and we meet outside Halfords.

From Kendal we will head for Kirkby Lonsdale via Staveley, Underbarrow, Hincaster and Burton in Kendal. 11's will be at The Bakery in Kirkby.

From here we will go over Barbondale and have lunch in Sedbergh before returning over Fox's Pulpit and Docker for a total distance of 54 Miles.

The route is undulating, but the climb over Fox's Pulpit has sections of 20% gradient.

At the moment the forecast for Wednesday is looking OK, but if things change and the weather is looking better around the coast, we will head for Silverdale and Arnside after we leave Kirkby Lonsdale. The total distance of this alternative route will be approximately the same.

Hope to see you Wednesday.

Keith G.

Karen's ride on Wednesday 26 October -

A beautiful autumnal trip to the seaside, leaving Cafe Twelve62, Wigton (in the market place) at 10.30am. Our return will be via Abbeytown back to Wigton. Mainly flat, around 40ish miles and my usual average pace.

Hope to see you there.

New Touring Site may be of interest

I recently had an email from Ian Yarroll:
Hello

I've just set up a cycle touring website - it's based on various bikepacking and touring journeys that I have made over the last few years in Europe and the UK.  It contains practical info and resources which I hope will help others to plan trips - it has not been set up for any commercial purposes

If you feel this might be of interest to your members I'd appreciate it if you could forward the website link to them

many thanks, Ian

When I say touring perhaps touring off road might be more appropriate! This is certainly not about the back lanes of France on a road bike!

EVCUK AGM on Saturday 22 October

Only 4 of the current Committee members are standing for re-election. We are delighted to have volunteers for the posts of Treasurer and Runs Co-ordinator, but anyone wishing to put themselves forward would be most welcome. In particular, Nigel would like to relinquish the position of Newsletter Editor if a replacement can be found, although he is willing to remain on the Committee in another capacity.
Please see Geoff's blog of Sunday 25 September and click in the appropriate places if you wish to join the lunch on the Saturday or the anniversary ride on the Sunday. Look forward to seeing you,
Alison
