Sunday 2 October

In the absence of a run on the list, I am proposing to start from Langwathby village green at 9.30 am to ride via Culgaith and Temple Sowerby to 11s at Morland. From there, I will go via Lowther and Celleron to Granny Dowbekin's at Pooley Bridge for lunch, returning via Penrith to Langwathby - total distance about 32 miles at a pace to suit the slowest in the group.
Nigel will be with me - at least for some of it - and may do a more ambitious loop between 11s and lunch.
I hope to see some of you somewhere!

Macmillan Big Coffee Morning

Dalston Tennis Club 10.15 -12.00 Friday September 30th

This year I am unable to offer lunch in aid of Macmillan, but anyone in the Dalston area on Friday would be most welcome at the coffee morning. Great tea, coffee, cakes, bakes, scones and more!
The tennis club is by the Recreational Field, signed from The Green. We had the Trivets there in 2010.
If you cannot come but would like to contribute, text JAM9FNT to 70550. Texts cost £5 plus any network charge. Then texting STOP to 70550 will stop any begging messages from Macmillan.
Hope to see some of you there.

Club Ride Wednesday 28 September

Unfortunately Ernest is unable to lead the ride on Wednesday so Geoff and I will lead it for him and it will be as per runs list, departing from the church gates in Sedbergh at 0930. There is free on road parking on Busk Lane.
The route will take us through Garsdale to Askrigg where we will have 11's. From here we will go over Kidstones and Cray via Aysgarth and have lunch in Kettlewell. Our return will take us to Arncliffe and over to Malham Tarn, Horton in Ribblesdale, Ribblehead, Dentdale and finally back to Sedbergh. The total distance will be 75 miles and the route will be quite hilly.
At the moment the forecast is for light rain, but if conditions are grim there will be opportunity to modify the route accordingly.
We hope to see you on Wednesday.

Ride on Wednesday 28 September

Hi Folks

My ride on Wednesday meets and leaves Caldbeck, the Smithy cafe at 10.45am .  As its the last day of the 'Go Herdwick exhibition, Rheged, Penrith ( where the full flock of 108 life sized sheep and lambs, artist decorated are on show ) my plan is to cycle, average pace, via Greystoke to Rheged for lunch and view the 'Herdy's' Return to Caldbeck a different way .

20 years - CELEBRATORY RIDE - Sunday 23rd October

The Clubs first ride ever was on 16th October 1996 so to commemorate this we would like everyone who can to turn out and ride to Orton Sca Cafe. Starting at 10.00 on Sunday 23rd October (the Sunday after the AGM)from Appleby Car Park (not the cloisters this time because of potential numbers?)
We will of course split into groups if numbers are large but the idea is that we will stay in groups cycling at a steady pace until we reach  Orton.(12.00 ish) After a fuel stop there we may like to split up and go our different ways at different paces. So that I can warn the cafe at Orton can you please add your name to the list HERE (click) if you intend to turn up on the day. There will be a choice of route although for the purists the original route went from Appleby to Coleby following the Sustrans route up to Jerusalem over to Kings Meaburn Moulds Meaburn Crosby R and on up to Orton.

Notice of AGM and Lunch

AGM - Saturday 22nd October
Just to remind you all that the AGM is due to take place on Saturday 22nd October at 1400 in Langwathby Village Hall with a lunch at 12-30 which will be bring and share like last year. I am sending all this years members an email and a copy of the minutes from last years meeting also. If you have matters for the Agenda please let me have a short outline of the matter you want to raise by no later than 10 days before (12th Oct) so that I can prepare an Agenda.
LUNCH
There is to be a bring and share lunch at 12.30 in Langwathby Village Hall and it would be a great help if we could co-ordinate the food like last year please enter what you will be bringing and the approx numbers on the table HERE (click) If you can't provide food then feel free to attend but a contribution of £5 would be appreciated.

Club Ride Sunday 25 September

Sunday's ride will start from Morrison's car park in Kendal at 0930. There is no problem in using the car park, but I suggest you park at the rear near Halfords and we can meet up there.
As the road through to Burneside is now completely closed, our route will take us firstly to Brigsteer from where we will head around the bay. Elevenes will be in Cartmel via Grange, Flookborough and Cark.
From here our route will take us over to High Newton and Witherslack Woods before getting to Silverdale and Arnside, where we will have lunch. The return leg will take us through Heversham, Sedgwick and Natland for a total distance of approximately 55 Miles.
At the moment there is a possibility of light showers later in the afternoon, but if conditions look to deteriorate there are options to modify the route accordingly.
I hope to see you tomorrow.

Ride Sunday 18th

The weather is looking much better now for this ride which although quite hilly will be taken at a steady group pace on the flats. (and even slower on the hills!) All welcome as usual and we will be stopping at Nenthead for coffee at the post office and either Allendale Town or Bearsbridge(Whitfield) for lunch. It might be foggy at the start so it would be as well to bring a back light. (charged!) Distance covered will be 60 ±2 mi! Guaranteed!

What's in a Name

The more observant amongst you will have noticed some subtle changes to both the Blog and the Website. According to the latest version of the CUK Policy Handbook (2016) which amusingly has a page header running through it of 2012 we should name the Group "Eden Valley Cycling UK".
Accordingly I have done a first run through the website and Blog making changes. (Who would be a secretary or website manager?!) and have updated some of the titles. I have included the "Winged Wheel" as a token reflection of the illustrious history of the organisation so I hope that will placate anyone who sees all this re-branding as a retrograde step. It is easy to please some of the people some of the time but....
It seems to me that what is important is the people in the group and the cycling. I think  we are extremely lucky on both counts in the Eden Valley.

Xmas Lunch

So that you are aware of the date (I thought I'd posted it already but don't appear to have yet)

Saturday 17th December 2016 12.30 Mrs Millers

menus/prices will be available at the AGM for you to choose.

In Memory of Alex Knox Thursday 15th September

The Family will be holding a private interment on Thursday morning, but then there will be an Informal light lunch at Kirkby Stephen Youth Hostel from 12.30 onwards when there will be an opportunity to talk about Alex's life. EV members all welcome. Ring Jen C or Alison S for more details.

Club Ride Wednesday 14 September

Wednesday's ride will start from The Cloisters in Kirkby Stephen at 0930. The route will take us through Nateby and over Lamps Moss and Buttertubs to Hawes, where we will have 11's. From here we will go over Fleet Moss and Cray to Aysgarth for lunch at Aysgarth Falls café. The post lunch return will be on kinder terrain, taking us through Askrigg and Hardraw before the gentle climb over Mallerstag and back to KS. The total distance will be 68 miles.

This will be a very hilly ride pre-lunch, notably Buttertubs and Fleet Moss, where there are gradients of up to 25%, but the pace of the ride will reflect this. The forecast for Wednesday is excellent - warm, sunny and light winds - perfect for a day out in The Dales!

Hope to see you on Wednesday.

Wednesday 7th September ride

Alison and I are intending to make a couple of comfortable rides, both moderate in pace, starting at the Cross Keys Carleton Penrith tomorrow at 0930.  The coffee (11's) stop will be at the Pot Place and lunch at the Up Front Gallery, Unthank, when we respectively get there.
Alison is offering a more gentle pace than I, not that I am expecting a tearaway one. Mileages will depend on the group but I am expecting, for my longer ride, to be between 30 and 40 miles for the day.
Look forward to seeing you.

CTC tour 1654 - Sierra de Cazorla, Spain. 17th Sept to 2nd Oct

I have just received an email from Tony Gore who will be leading the above tour starting.   A copy of part of his email is below in italics.    There is space for one male on the trip.

Just a quick note to let you know that I will be emailing your final tour briefing and associated information later this week, and posting the route cards around the same time.

Apologies for the slight delay, this has been caused by a late cancellation by a male member of the group, and my efforts to find a replacement. Please feel free to share this last minute vacancy with others in your cycling networks who might be interested.

The tour straddles the borders of Andalusia, Castilla La Mancha and Murcia.

Alex Knox - sad announcement

It is with great regret that I have to announce that Alex died in the night last Thursday from a heart attack. Alex was one of the founding members of CTC Eden Valley and although not out regularly in recent years I remember times as a more recent member when he would attend weeks away and was regularly to be seen cycling around the lanes near Kirkby Stephen where he lived.
Funeral arrangements have not been finalized, but Jen C will let us know when more information is available.
