Club Ride Sunday 1 November

Sunday's ride will start from The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen at 0930.

The route will take us to Gunnerside via Mallerstang and Buttertubs, with lunch at The Ghyllfoot Tearooms after 26 miles. I have checked that the tearoom is open as the website indicated that they would close at the end of October and been assured they will in fact be open (just in case any of you checked!).

After lunch we will return home via Low Row and Tan Hill before descending into Keld and finishing via Lamps Moss and Nateby. The total distance will be 53 miles over a hilly terrain.

There are options to reduce the climbing if anyone wished to join us for lunch but would prefer a slightly less severe terrain by going straight to Gunnerside over Lamps Moss - I would suggest setting off from KS a little later than us (20-30 mins) - and returning to KS from Tan Hill via Winton.

The forecast at the moment is looking very good - ie white cloud, no wind and reasonable temperatures. What more could you want!

Hope to see you Sunday.

Club Kit

Not all of us are interested in buying club clothing but for those that would like to buy garments in the new design please let me know so that we can negotiate a good price on the first order.
The following details are needed:

Article name (don't forget to state zip size) and code with the size required.
Send me an email with your requirements eg
Long sleeved road jersey Long zip size 12

When I get an order together I will let you know how much it will cost. Bear in mind the prices are ex VAT!

Sizing charts here
Price list here
pdf of design here (shows long sleeved jersey)

I have sample jerseys for sizing for another week but then they must be returned, however the sizing charts are fairly comprehensive.

Any unwanted older bikes out there?

There is a women's refuge in Kendal and I have had an enquiry, from someone there, seeking bikes for use by the residents.  They are very much hoping for gifts but may be able to raise a small amount to buy.  The enquiry is quoted below:

'The bikes would be used on the roads, to go into town, leisure centre, college etc.  Some women seem reluctant to use public transport – sometimes it’s the cost, but sometimes they don’t like being in an enclosed space with strangers.

Or just a ride into the countryside – quite a few of the women come from cities and are amazed how quickly you can get into the open.  There is some risk of the bikes getting lost/stolen/sold.........  We’re not talking serious cyclists, just to have some in the shed for anyone to use.  At the moment, there are three women who like to cycle.'

If anyone has a bike that they don't want/need that might be vaguely suitable please contact Mary on 01539 733275 or email mchristian21@hotmail.co.uk

We might be able to sort transport out if that was an issue.

Thank you,
Cathy

Coral Cafe to close!

The Coral Cafe at Plumpton is to close permanently at the end of December.  The lease is not going to be renewed.    The cafe manager Jane, is setting up a cafe at the Foyer, on Old London Road, Penrith.   The cafe will be known as 'JaneyMacs'.   I understand the premises is opposite Marks & Spencers.   There is car parking and there will be space for bikes.   Jane's tel No is the same - 07765 423826.

it's that time again - Christmas Lunch

We are holding our Christmas lunch again this year at Mrs Millers Culgaith and it is to be on the 19th December. (Sorry we could not get the 12th it was booked up even back in August when I made the provisional booking) Like last year it will be 12.15 for 12.30pm

I should be grateful if you would let me know whether you are coming by completing the form. And choosing your options from one of the menus (one is specifically for vegetarians) If you have special dietary requirements please state this and James(the chef) can accommodate these.

if this presents a problem in terms of IT skills(!) just give me a ring and I'll put the menu and form in the post.

I would be grateful (as it makes payment and making changes so much easier) if you could make cheques payable to me G. C Anderson. If you want to transfer electronically - send me a message and I'll let you have our account details. If you use this method please mark it 'Xmas lunch'.

Incidentally the forms and menus will be available at the AGM on Saturday so another reason to come!

Newsletter 50

Thanks very much to Nigel for the latest stunning newsletter which you can find on the website(new page turning format suitable for ipads etc) or download from this link as a .pdf

Saturday 24 th October - Cycle ride prior to AGM

Subject to weather conditions I propose to lead a short ride from Langwathby Village Hall ( starting at 09:30 ) for 11's at The Coral Room Cafe at Plumpton. I phoned Jane this afternoon at the cafe so she is prepared for us. It is intended that we will return to Langwathby Village before 12:30 or by 12:30 at the latest

Club Ride Wednesday 21 October

The ride will start from Devil's Bridge, Kirkby Lonsdale at 0930. There is free parking either on the road down to Devil's Bridge or on the right as you take the first turn left after the bridge on the A683 signposted to Casterton and  Barbon.

The route will take us to Horton in Ribblesdale for 11s going via Barbondale, Dentdale and Ribblehead.  Lunch will be at the Garden Centre in Wray by way of Austwick and Clapham. The return leg will take us through Hornby and Arkholme for a total distance of 56 miles.

The first leg is hilly, but thereafter the terrain is fairly gentle. The forecast at the moment is predicting showers, but it is improving as I obsessively monitor it! However, if conditions are grim, there are several opportunities to modify the route.

Hope to see you Wednesday.

AGM again - reminder

To all members

If you have not received the email that I sent on 14th September - sorry! (please speak/telephone so we can get to the bottom of the problem)

the AGM is to be held

in Langwathby Village Hall at 2pm on Saturday 24th October 2015

There will be no doubt a ride and/or walk in the morning (usually 0930) which will be blogged nearer the time starting from the Hall.

Also lunch at the Hall at 12.30pm which this year will be a bring and share with soup(and bread) coffee and tea also provided. Please let me know if you intend coming to the lunch so that we have some idea of numbers. I would also appreciate if you could fill in the sheet here  (click the link) if you will be bringing some food, so that we can have an idea of what will be available! I suggest £5 per head if you will not be providing food - any surplus to charity.

If you have items to be discussed at the meeting please let me have proposals in writing by Saturday 17th October(now is too late!) so that we can prepare an Agenda which I will circulate.(expect Mon or Tues 19/20)
Minutes of AGM2014 were sent with the email and some copies will be available at the meeting.

club run & train connection

In the next runs list currently being compiled, Rachel is to be congratulated for timing a ride from Kirkby Stephen to coincide with the train timetable.   The first runs leader to do so I think.   Others organising rides from KS, Appleby or Langwathby should consider doing the same, particularly if they can reasonably expect members to come by train.

Sunday 18th Ride t' Yorkshire Dales

Statistics are: 105km (65mi) and my Garmin says 1586m (5000ft)
Cool but dry. (Well, compared to Mallorca!)
Starting at Appleby cloisters this is quite a hilly ride. We go over to Winton and up to Tan Hill for coffee(33km). Then at Langthwaite in Arkengarthdale where we turn R over to Low Row and search for a cafe (lunch but BYO to be sure) in Gunnerside or Muker(60km). Then on through Thwaite, Keld and over Lamps Moss to Kirkby Stephen returning by the ups and downs of Smardale Crosby Garrett  Whygill head and Drybeck back to Appleby.
Hope to see you there!

Anne Key

For those of you that knew Anne and would like to attend her funeral, it will be held at Carlisle Crematorium at 10.20 a.m. on the 23rd October. There will be a tea afterwards in Bampton Village hall.

Tuesday 13 October 2015

Tomorrow's (14/10) ride

Don't forget it's 9.00 a.m. at Cotehill or 10.30 latest at Renwick (hall opens at 10.00 a.m. if you want to arrive earlier).

Published ride is 50+ to Brampton via loops. As the weather forecast is good (again!) I'm proposing just one loop - to Alston and Lambley. This will increase the mileage to 60+, but I'm sure nobody will be objecting?

Wednesday 7 October 2015

Newsletter (October 2015)

I am intending to get out our next Newsletter by our AGM (remember ? -  the 24th October). Tails, paws for thoughts, shaggy dog stories (as well as articles, photos ...) would be really welcome to finish it off.
