Wednesday 31st December ride

I am proposing to go for a ride on Wednesday, free from ice but accepting that 'weather' of a different nature may cool us. My plan is to go about 45 miles, most before lunch at Booths in Penrith; I hope to get there before any others doing the single stop rides leave.
My proposed route may be changed on the day but at the moment looks like:
start at Langwathby 1000.  Winskill, Gamblesby, Renwick, Kirkoswald, Lazonby, Booths at Penrith (lunch).  After lunch Brougham Hall, Cliburn, over the hill to Culgaith and back to Langwathby.
At the moment I am not intending to stop for a morning coffee but will be open to persuasion;  the weather may have a bearing on my thinking.
Happy to share the ride with anyone who wants to come along;  if you are planning ahead and would like to give me a ring to say you are coming it would be good to hear from you.

World record attempt

In 1939 Tommy Godwin cycled 75,065 miles in a single year, a world record that the Guinness Book of Records has declared unbreakable.

In 2015 Audax UK member Steve Abraham will attempt to break that record.
Starting 1 January, he will cycle an average of over 200 miles every day for a year. No days off because it is cold or because he is tired. This is a one-year time trial.
Steve cannot break this record on his own. He has a dedicated team behind him, working round the clock to keep him on the road. He also has the full backing of Audax UK, who will support him all the way.

But Steve needs your help too.
You can help Steve by making a donation now or by donating every month through a standing order. You can also offer to give him a bed for a night while he's away from home:

  • £5 will buy Steve a slap-up meal to keep his fuel tanks full and his spirit up.
  • £20 will buy him a new chain. He'll need a new one every week.
  • £100 will keep Steve on the road for the day, a day closer to achieving this incredible dream.
  • £2 a month will buy him a regular coffee or beer.

You can make a donation using your Paypal account or any credit or debit card, or send an email if you’d prefer to set up a standing order.

Steve is also looking for hosts across the country, who can give him a bed for the night, feed him and get him back on the road the next day. If you can be a host, for one night or longer, send his team an email with details of where you live and when you can host Steve.

Finally, you can support Steve by telling your friends, family and the rest of the world about his incredible world-record attempt. Ask them to visit Steve’s website at www.oneyeartimetrial.org.uk, and encourage them to make a donation too.

Cathy and I are heading for the coast on Sunday where the temperature should be above freezing. From there we will head for Leighton Moss for lunch before returning via Silverdale and Arnside.Total distance 40 miles.
If you are interested in joining us you would be most welcome. We can park at the Village Hall at a cost of £1 for the day. Please let me know  if you intend joining us. We plan to leave at 1000.
Should the weather conditions deteriorate I will post an update.

Wednesdays Ride 17th

The weather looks settled and mild if a bit grey so we may up the mileage slightly but nothing silly!
If we can do without a coffee stop(as long as we all agree) we could take in Shap and I have told Norman (Newbiggin - Lune Spring Gdn Centre) that we will be in for a late lunch .
This is due to be a steady if undulating ride suitable for the time of year and conditions of the lanes (I was out yesterday and was caught in a downpour!)
Hope to see you tomorrow - you know you need to get in as much riding as possible before the Christmas break!

Club Ride Tomorrow

Given the forecast for high winds and rain, the route will be reviewed on an on going basis. We will head for Wray and if conditions are deemed to be unsuitable we will stop for coffee at the Garden Centre and reappraise.
If the conditions are considered to be OK we can miss coffee at Wray and head for Clapham where we can again review the situation over lunch and further modify the route if necessary.
Of course if conditions are considered to be dangerous at the outset, in the interests of rider safety, we could abandon the ride.

Rides 14th Dec

Apparently Cups and Saucers is closed for the winter so there has been a change of lunch venues for both the Moderate and the Main ride.
The moderates will have a latish 11s at Watchtree then return to Dalston where soup, tea and coffee will be provided,BYO sandwiches. If it is a lovely day and if there is any daylight we could do a short ride after lunch.
I had realised that the planned 40 miler was unrealistic at this time of the year. Riding with lights is not part of the Moderates ethos!

Ian will probably do the same for the Main ride but anyone not at the Christmas lunch check on the blog again before Sunday

Club Ride Wednesday 10 December

The ride will start at 1000 from the Village Hall in Burton in Kendal. We have an arrangement to use their car park for a fee of £1 per car for the day. Cathy and I will collect on the day and forward to their Treasurer.
The plan is to head for Clapham and Ingleton via Borwick, Capernwray and Wray. Lunch will be at The Falls Café Ingleton (24 miles), from where we will head home via Burton in Lonsdale and Kirkby Lonsdale. Total distance will be 44 miles.
The forecast could be better, but things can change before then. If not, we can alter the route and seek out drier and more sheltered terrain.
Hope to see you Wednesday.

Design your Club clothing!

As a result of the discussions at the AGM and the request to go ahead with a design for club clothing and order it through ImpSport the committee has decided to encourage members and/or relatives to submit designs to the committee by the end of the year (31/12/14).
The design brief is "that the colours would be mainly yellow, blue to reflect the previous design, and they could include other colours. A logo might be included and the lettering 'Eden Valley' ".
You can click on the images to make them bigger

So its over to you - here are some ideas from the ImpSport website that I prepared earlier to give you some idea and a picture of the old design as it was on my gilet (sorry a bit dirty!)
